His nigiri exhibit technical perfection and he differentiates himself by sourcing a lot of seafood from his hometown of Amakusa in Kyushuu instead of through the Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo.

Nakaji

I think Nakaji is one of the absolute best in the city. It's no Sho or Yoshino but I like it even more than Shion for both the otsumami and the nigiri.

Pick ten nigiris and one roll for $53. Best quality to price ratio in my book.

Sushi Jin

Sushi Jin is more off the beaten path, but thought they were serving nigiri on par with the truly top tier ($300+) spots in NYC for about half the price.

The nigiri is excellent but nothing about it is truly earth shattering once you’re at this level (actually think it’s better than sho)

Again their nigiri is better than any of the cheap omakases.

Noz Market’s lunch deal (while not as cheap as it used to be) is a great experience! $90 for great quality classic nigiri

Momoya

Momoya SoHo has an insanely good deal with 8 piece nigiri and 1 maki for $35. The quality of the sushi is on par $75-$100 omakase places in my opinion and you get similar portions for literally half the price.

Juku

Juku IS very good, but where they really shine is at nigiri-only variety (I’ve had as many as 6 uni varieties in one omakase).

Its 90$, you don't sit at a counter, but it includes several appetizers, the quality of the nigiri was quite high, dessert.

Nigiri at Rosella: 9/10 best a la carte sushi in NYC (I’m not a huge fan of omakase)

Good skewers selection, nigiri of a great size for 5-6$/piece always with a perfectly warm rice and decent drinks and ambiance.

Sushi You

The best omakase around there is Sushi You, an underground spot where you'll be surrounded by japanese nationals and served unconventional but delicious nigiri and sashimi.

Korami was good! Dinner only took one hour, about 13 different nigiri, friendly staff, not too expensive.

All of the other nigiri courses were great as well, each with its own unique twist. The prepared dishes, which come in the premium set, were the weakest part of the set but still fun to try.

Noz 17

Definitely worth going to and it hits higher than its price-point would make you think, since they just switched to this nigiri-heavy format from a more traditional 25-ish course omakase.
