In light of all that, an olive oil cake and espresso at Abraco is divine.

Espresso: A perfectly made coffee just like the ones I have in Italy. I looked for and drank several espressos during my stay, but this one was definitely the best. It made me feel like I was back home.

Seconding Ninth Street Espresso! The only espresso I trust.

Espresso is only as good as its weakest link. Good quality beans + Roasted recently (but not too recently) and to a uniform roast level + The grind size of each batch of beans dialed in to yield good extraction, given a particular dosage, pressure, and temp + The barista using freshly ground espresso and consistently applying the correct dosage, tamping pressure, and yield (such as 18g of ground coffee to 36g of liquid espresso). Solid State is awesome (and underrated) because they care more about the coffee than marketing gimmicks.

They know how to pull a shot of espresso. That being said, their purveyor of coffee is absolute scum. It sucks their espresso is so good because the people behind the actual beans are not

for strong + cheap in your radius: porto rico on st marks. they roast their own beans daily and an espresso/americano runs like two bucks. it's the opposite of the watery blank street thing.

Additionally, if your date is anything like my family, after dinner they like to have an espresso and a dessert so I would recommend maybe going to Joey Bats Cafe for an espresso and some Pasteis Da Nata, which are as good as anything I've had in the Portuguese diaspora I grew up in.
