replying to u/Electrical-Sense-156: The best is buying all of your fish at an appetizing store like Russ and Daughters or Sables or a good counter like at Zabars. Then you go to a bagel shop that bakes on premises. Buy fresh bagels. Go home and assemble your open faced bagel sandwiches.

replying to u/JelloDarkness: You should try NY Jumbo Bagels (2nd Ave betw 56th and 57th) if you haven't already. They are my favorite of all of the great choices in NYC. Their turnover is high enough where if you don't have a strong preference on bagel type you can just ask for whichever ones are warm. They are not the best for sandwiches (putting aside the "cream cheese sandwich") but the strength/quality of their bagel is hard to beat.
