  • replying to u/gagnerocs38: Holiday Cocktail Lounge is the answer. Much better drinks than they should be for the price

I love holiday, but Its not romantic and this is a couple celebrating 10 year anniversary. Holiday is unprencious and the opposite of sexy, they have decent cocktails but not amazing.

One of the beautiful things about New York is how many different kinds of bars there are Throw in some shitty dive bars in the East Village like The Library or Blue and Gold or a beer hall like Radegast or an old historic bar like Faunces Tavern. The other problem is a lot of these places have insane lines or require reservations because of all the bullshit hype/ influencers/ limited amount of seats Whatever you do,do not leave without going to New Yorks most important bar, McSoreleys. Preferably early before it gets crowded

Agree. Also I’d add Holiday Cocktail Lounge for divey with good cocktails!

  • replying to u/HotMountain9383: Well as for drinks I’m glad you enjoyed but we should be able to do better for you next time than those most touristy of tourist NYC bars.

    none were a bad experience

  • replying to u/Prudent-Attempt8425: To be fair I did a lot less research on bars, they weren’t my main priority - but none were a bad experience (although cocktail prices are quite eye watering!)

those are NYC legends and it’s good that you went had a drink there.

I think Holday can be romantic if you make it so. There are plenty of great answers in here for pricier bars so figured I’d throw out the true cheap option that still gets it done

  • replying to u/titaniumdoughnut: If I'm understanding the vibe right, try these. This is sadly a bit of a dying breed in NYC as high prices are forcing all the chill neighborhood spots to dry up, and they get replaced by trendy expensive things. \- Frank's and Lil Frankie's \- Kiki's \- al di la Trattoria \- If you're not from a place with good Mexican/American Mexican: Taqueria St Marks Place, bomb-ass LA 90s Mex style \- Holiday Cocktail Lounge And for bonus, one that feels like a chill neighborhood spot while ALSO being trendy and expensive: \- Superiority Burger

Seconding all of this. All spots that feel reflective of the neighborhoods.

  • replying to u/LoriJayneNYC: Underrated- MANOS, it’s so good, it’s the best pizza, but I do still love Sal and Carmines if you’re uptown and hungry. Underrated- Shanghai Zhen Gong Fu, best XLB in the city, all varieties, headed there now for my Jewish Christmas Eve Underrated- max soha up on 122nd and Amsterdam, perfect nyc trattoria Underrated- the pastor cart outside Myrtle wyckoff trains at night with 3/5 taquitos, when they’re on they’re on. Underrated- holiday cocktail lounge, a pretty perfect place to drink a well made but zero pretension cocktail/comfy booths and great vibe/zine menu Underrated- JUA, best sub $150 tasting menu I’ve had in the last few years, still dream of their sweet potato donut and striped jack

It's probably one of the last remaining good dives around.
