replying to u/fermentedradical: This is the list. TBH you should go to r/pourover and look as that's the real spot for 3rd Wave nerdiness on Reddit. I would really suggest taking the train to Brooklyn and hitting Sey, Loveless, and Dayglow in a row as they're super close to each other. Manhattan you can do La Cabra and Coffee Project pretty easily within a few blocks, too.

replying to u/Snoo-18544: NYC isn't a great city for 3rd wave/specialty coffee, the coffee movement popularized by places like Oregon stumptown. The best near union square is probably la cabra. For Thai and south east Asian near union square laut and soothr are good. They are average price by NYC standards (which is 50 to 75 per person without alcohol. Sobaya and Raku would be cool places to try if you've never had soba or udon. They are in east village which is adjacent to union square. West coast is better for affordable sushi and tacos, so you may want to save those things for a California trip. NYC has good sushi, but entry level here is a 100$ per person affair. For tacos, taqueria ramirez can hang with anywhere, but you will be paying 5$ per taco minimum which is standard in manhattan. I would recommend going into China town and doing a cheap food crawl. There are plenty of youtube videos showing what to do. Union square is a big transit hub and 4 stops on the six train which runs frequently gets you to canal street which is the heart of China town.

replying to u/Snoo-18544: Not anywhere I'd recommend if your friend is hardcore into coffee. I love coffee and seek out good shops. NYCs rents are too high for good artisanal shops to survive on just coffee. So it's difficult enough to find good pour over coffee shops, let alone places that do flights/tastings. Like your not going to find an experience like substance in Paris or 3rd Wave shops that do cuppings in other cities. Now with this said. The best shops in my opinion is suited, sey, loveless, la Cabra, Do not feed the alligators. Hi Collar a Japanese brunch cafe has a super unique siphon pour over. If you wanted you could actually potentially do la Cabra, hi Collar and do not feed the alligators as a coffee crawl.
