replying to u/Schmeep01: Thai son has been a standard for me because their grilled pork is something else, but the NYC location has Pasteur next door, giving a serious run for its money (I like their sweet and sour soup too much not to order that instead). Recently I started going to Nom Nam on e34th and found the Pho excellent- the Banh Mi there is lovely as well.

replying to u/theillustratedlife: Have you found a good bun cha anywhere? I have not. La Dong had a solid attempt and the owner seemed motivated to improve. I haven't been since it first opened. Saigon Social looked the part, but doesn't hit the spot. Hanoi House's portions were offensively small for the price, and also not good. It surprises me how many places batch make all their phin coffee. It's never as good that way.

replying to u/wipny: Does the restaurant serve Northern Vietnamese food or a mix? Not Vietnamese but I thought Southern pho was the one that serves raw beansprouts and herbs on the side. Have you been to Nom Nam in Midtown East? I'm in agreement with u/2u3ee that they make my favorite beef pho. The broth is rich and nuanced. What about Tenten? They're one of the very few I've come across that uses fresh noodles in their pho. IMO their broth is a little lacking compared to Nom Nam but they have the Northern garnishes like the pickled garlic and chiliin vinegar.

“As for Vietnamese spots, I recommend Nom Nam, Kitchen Co Ut, and Pho Ga Vang. I advise you keep your expectations low. They're good for NYC, but won't blow your socks off like Vietnamese food found in Philly, California, or Texas.”
