replying to u/foreverstarlit: I’m also from LA and the last time I brought my family out here, my mom and sister were obsessed with Fish Cheeks. I know there’s a lot of great Thai in LA, but the food at Fish Cheeks is unique to what I’ve had in LA. They were here for a week and we went for their first meal upon landing and for their last meal before they left!

“Less weird but also not that common (for NYC) dishes that I’ve enjoyed include Honduran baleadas at Seis Vecinos, athoke salads at Little Myanmar, shark roti at Feroza’s, Uruguayan chivito at Chivito d’Oro, tacos de chapulines (grasshoppers) at different spots, mole oaxaqueño at La Morada, and pig’s head in Flushing.”

I slept on this restaurant due to low Google reviews and then realized it has a Michelin Bibgournand and had made the nyt top 100 at some point in the last three years. The Google reviews seem to be mostly people complaining that there isn't a public bathroom or not realizing how small the restaurant it. The place only has 14 seats. Family run and is cash only. You can easily get out for under 30$. It's a true gem of a restaurant that was correctly identified by Michelin and NYT folks that doesn't get near enough love. Ive walked in multiple times on a Saturday for lunch. I took my 70 year old parents here when they came to visit as it's the type of place they'd appreciate as they wouldn't be comfortable in upscale places and prefer humble food like what is served here. The tea leaf salads are a must.
