replying to u/thansal: Is that 'bars or restaurants', or 'bar restaurants'? If it's an OR: Just pick a neighborhood with a lot of good places and stumble around. My default for this is the East Village. There's a half dozen bars and a couple dozen restaurants that I love there, if one is full I can get in at another, often with my name and number down at the first to come back to. Many of the places flat out don't take reservations, so you don't even need to worry about that. If all else fails, put your name down somewhere and then head to Burp Castle, I've literally never been unable to get a table there since it's a quite bar (so don't be a dick and keep your voice down).

Fiaschetteria is an amazing Tuscan Italian restaurants that’s from Tuscany. Pretty authentic and worth it even though it’s in alphabet city, not a far walk. Lions bar for the best burger in the city imo La cabra for coffee and cardamom bun Burp castle is a unique beer pub that’s famous for shushing loud customers. Good Belgian beer menu Venieros is an old Italian pastry shop that is a vibe at night time. Nothing crazy good but just quintessential old nyc and fun to go to Garfunkels is a cool cocktail bar that’s a speakeasy
