My default for this is the East Village. There's a half dozen bars and a couple dozen restaurants that I love there, if one is full I can get in at another, often with my name and number down at the first to come back to. Many of the places flat out don't take reservations, so you don't even need to worry about that. If all else fails, put your name down somewhere and then head to Burp Castle, I've literally never been unable to get a table there since it's a quite bar (so don't be a dick and keep your voice down).
