The Office of Mr. Moto

  • It seems that the high price tag is mostly driven by the "experience"--such as the service, decor, and atmosphere. In that sense, you will probably be disappointed if you are primarily going for food--but might be OK if you're more interested in the "theme park" elements.

  • replying to u/yoerez: Office is Mr Moto sucks. The most ordinary sushi, literally nothing special happens

It’s one of the better traditional sushi places in the city at that price point, there’s a riddle to get in, it’s in an unusual speakeasy type setting, the decor is gorgeous, and there’s a story arc to the menu.

  • Instead, it was a very good, solid experience. Service was great, and the variety of fish was a pleasant surprise (it wasn't just 5 types of tuna and salmon). I'd definitely go back.

  • Not a super pricey place given what I believed to be incredible service, ambiance, and most importantly, the taste and quality of the dishes.

  • replying to u/netllama: Can you elaborate on this? I went and thought it was a genuinely charming, solid experience. Food was good (not amazing).

the sushi was so bland to me. I don’t think they give you soy sauce as with most reputable omakase. I felt the progression of the fish was also off and not as refined as other omakase I’ve had.

Agreed, it’s mediocre and way overhyped by influencers.

  • replying to u/Fragdict: > Toro with caviar is a usual standout bite at other sushi places but here it even lacked flavor. Most bites were white fish that had no real distinction between another This part is pretty telling. Toro with caviar as a standout is such a Western view enamored by “luxury”. AFAIK in Japan white fish is more popular as they got accustomed to the nuances. It’s always the gaijin who complain the white fish don’t have flavor, demanding tuna and salmon instead. To my palate, the white fish at Mr Moto had so much variation in flavor and texture between each piece. I can’t say how they are now, but when I went they were certainly better than Nakazawa—though that’s not saying much considering how panned Nakazawa is. Recent reviews point to the apprentices starting to serve sushi to guests, so that might be it.

My favorite thing about Mr. Moto is how traditional it is while still being accessible both from a price and approachability (more explanation and hand-holding) standpoint.

  • replying to u/panzerxiii: How was it? I was reading their website and it barely says anything about the restaurant and nothing about the chef and all the branding is about the guy from the 1800s.

It was an extremely authentic experience and the chef that prepared our food had like 50 years of sushi making experience in Tokyo. (He actually hardly even spoke English) it was very fun and very delicious.

Worst is hyperbole but definitely average/too expensive for what it is

  • It’s a pretty good *traditional* omakase, keyword being traditional (which is why I’d avoid the modernity menu). Similar experiences would typically be more expensive.

  • For sushi omakase, I recommend TAKEDA, Office of Mr. Moto, Yoshino, and Sushi Noz.

  • Mr moto served cod milt so I would never recommend it.

  • replying to u/Agreeable-Ad-7110: Bad Roman is insane. But office of mr moto is a solid omakase that very well could get a bib gourmand. Idk what would make it a weird add. Restaurant yuu though is the one I’m most surprised by on your list. It’s an amazing and well thought out French tasting menu with slight Japanese influences. What makes it a weird possible addition? Was it just not your cup of tea? In which case, fair enough.

I thought the food quality at Mr Moto was low and it’s not much different from some of the other $100 omakases

  • replying to u/MrCakemeat: Consider yourself lucky on Ninja, that place was fucking terrible, even by themed restaurant standards. Truthfully NYC isn’t the best at what you’re describing, but my top picks would probably be… Office of Mr. Moto Tokyo Record Bar Panna II Garden Sushi Suite 1001

  • At that price point for nigiri-only I’d also look at The Office of Mr. Moto or Omakase by Mitsu

  • replying to u/lalalandedin: the office of mr moto is great for edomae style sushi and all of their fish is very unique as u dont see many of them in ny! very fresh and great service but hard to get reservation

the actual food is pretty mid and not worth the price and effort of getting reservation.

  • If we're talking about top omakase places, I count 13: Masa, Noz/Noz 17, Ichimura, Icca, Yoshino, Amane, Yasuda, Kosaka, Noda, Nakazawa, Shion 69 Leonard, and Mr. Moto. Why is 13 restaurants an unreasonable number of great omakase/sushi restaurants for a city that loves sushi in a metropolitan area with over 20 million people?
