  • The New Old Fashioned at the Doughnut Project is my favorite recently. They have a great selection overall and their weekend specials are usually something to behold but the simple deliciousness of that one is why i keep going back.

  • replying to u/eldersveld: First thing I ever had there. I wish I'd gotten to try The Doughnut Project's crullers before they closed down, since I heard they were comparable.

I wasn't blown away by Doughnut Project's maple crullers - the two times I tried them I enjoyed the flavor but found them very oily. OTOH, their sour cherry filled doughnut was fantastic; one of the only sour cherry things I've tried that had real tartness to it.

  • I'll still take Doughnut Project (anything) or Doughnut Plant (Chocolate Sourdough) though, both of which are double+ the price of Peter Pan.

  • replying to u/lakai2784: Bought a donut from a shop in soho for $8. Cried inside and said never again. I will regret taking the doughnut project for granted. It will be greatly missed

I still daydream about their beet and ricotta donuts.

The real advantage that Project had over everyone else was their wonky hours. You never got an old doughnut because they were contently frying more till they were done for the day.

  • Doughnut Project is my favorite. Expensive but worth every penny. Their cinnamon roll doughnut is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten

  • replying to u/Fragdict: Yes, their old fashioned donut is amazing. I stopped going to Mah-ze-Dahr because that’s the only thing I want, but 90% of the time they don’t have it.

their old fashioned is really stellar.

  • They do a donut bread pudding every year for Thanksgiving, I've yet to have one, but their donuts are fantastic and their chefs are mad geniuses, so I'd be willing to bet on it being good.

  • replying to u/srawr42: The Doughnut Project is closing and they're my favorite doughnuts in the city. You can put in a pick-up order. Supermoon Bakehouse also does some beautiful looking desserts. You could also swing into sweet Rehab for a little tart.

everything donut (i think they were the first to do it, at least around here) is a revalation IMO, and i absolutely adore their maple bacon bar and cruller.

Those two were better than anything I’ve tried, with the donut project a touch ahead.

  • replying to u/thansal: At about $2 a donut, Peter Pan is probably the only real option for inexpensive. I'll still take Doughnut Project (anything) or Doughnut Plant (Chocolate Sourdough) though, both of which are double+ the price of Peter Pan. If I'm going to be eating a pastry, I want it to be really damn good.

love me some doughnut project, that maple bacon is undefeated, and the everything donut was really mindblowing the first time i had it.

  • replying to u/efalaym: **Williamsburg/Greenpoint** is a great place to do this. It is very walkable and has a lot of great places: Borough Chocolates for chocolate bonbons. Federoff's Cheesesteak Peter Pan Donuts - inexpensive mom and pop shop style donuts. Moe's Donuts - founded by someone that used to work at Peter Pan's and only 1-2 blocks away from one another Qahwah House - Yemini coffee and tea. I recommend the Adeni Chai if you like masala chai as they are very similar. They have nice pastries as well. I really like the Khaliat Alnahl which it a pull apart bread filled with a soft cheese and drizzled with honey. There is a new location in the West Village as well which leads me to: **West Village places:** John's of Bleeker - AMAZING pizza and wonderful atmosphere. The booths are still the original ones from the 20s and are all carved up graffiti style. My friend just introduced it to me a couple weeks back and we are going again tomorrow. As a plus it is right near Qahwah house. See's Candy - Originally from San Francisco from the early 1900s (if I remember correctly) and a great place to dispel the myth of bad American chocolate Molly's Cupcakes - I always go for the Birthday cupcake (funfetti cake, blue frosting, and filled with cake batter), and the Ron Bennington (chocolate cake, with chocolate ganache frosting, and filled with peanut butter). Doughnut Project - NYC has some great gourmet donut places. This one has mostly yeast donuts, my picks are the ricotta filled, the lem…

I think it's a crime to not get a cruller, they're fucking killer. Also my favorite raised donuts.

That and the Maple Cruller were truly outstanding. I suggest everyone who has the chance to go before they close to go and try them.

  • Some amazing ones, like the coquito creme brûlée, any Thanksgiving special donuts (pecan pie, yum), Brie and cranberry, dark and stormy in the summer…sigh.

  • The maple bar from Project was good, but not my favorite donut (I like their black gold/specials for raised and the maple cruller is ridiculously good, but that's a cruller, not a donut).

They make my favorite raised and cake doughnuts, but the maple cruller is the real "Fuck, I need another one of those".

  • replying to u/thelionqueen1999: I personally haven’t enjoyed many of the donuts I’ve tried in NYC. - The Donut Project was just okay, not bad but nothing that made me go “woah!” - Donut Plant is fine. I feel like the prices aren’t totally worth it how small some of the donuts are. I do like their Brooklyn Blackout. - Dough’s Donut is probably my favourite, but the donuts are huge and more on the cakey side. However, I feel like they’re worth the price because of how thick they are. - Supermoon Bakehouse has good pastries in general, but their donuts are just classic filled donuts. - Donut Pub gives me a lot of mixed feelings. I feel like all the excitement is in the icing top, but the actual donut itself is a little dry. - Mochi donuts are boring for me. And given how small they are, they don’t really hit the spot. - I like cronuts (Dominique Ansel, Paris Baguette, etc.) They’re just a little pricey. - there’s a new vegan donut place that opened near LES I think? Nice donuts but incredibly overpriced and the donuts are small

Donut project’s cruller definitely made me go woah
