replying to u/thansal: Crash course on some of the top soup dumpling (Xiao Long Bao, or XLB) places: * Nan Xiang XLB - The old hotness, resurrected by a fan after it died. You can get it in Manhattan or Flushing, they have many flavor options. * Shanghai You Garden - The medium-old hotness. Story goes that it's a chef from the original Nan Xiang who opened it. There's a place in Flushing and in Bayside (don't go to Bayside). The fact that you can get individual roast duck buns is fantastic. * Joe's Shanghai - The OG. It's a tourist trap. They made them popular here in NYC, but it's just not worth the crowds/lines and the increased price. * Supreme Restaurant (100 Mott St) and Deluxe Green Bo - The most utilitarian options in Chinatown itself. I'm a fan of Supreme Restaurant myself, but there's plenty of proponents of both. * The Bao - My favorite in Manhattan. A bit more expensive, and they give you shitty metal soup spoons (too shallow, pulls away heat to quickly), but they're the finest I've had in Manhattan in a while. * My favorite is Memories of Shanghai in Forest Hills Queens. They punch so far above their weight class, and everything else they do is fire as well. That said, unless you're going to a show at the stadium, it's not worth a trip out there. You're not going to get bad soup dumplings at any of the places I listed (well, super unlikely, I had bad soup dumplings from the Bayside You Garden once), so I'd suggest whatever is the most convenient to you. If people have corrections or better places feel free to chime in because I'd also like to try them! Tasty dumpling- great steamed and fried dumplings, really thick chewy dumplings, I'm a big fan. Yi Ji Shi Mo- really little spot for rice noodle rolls, really good for a snack cuz they're small, but very cheap and tasty. Tai Pan bakery- I like grabbing a coconut bun, sesame balls, and my favorite- chinese style egg tarts May way fast food- fried pork chop is dynamite. I was impressed with how tender it was and it tasted awesome. Yin Ji Chang Feng- had a lot of good stuff but great congee here. Went here with a buddy after someone working at a tea shop we went to recommended it. Silk Road Cafe- the aforementioned tea shop. My friend and I split an excellent pot of oolong tea. Nice place to sit down and drink a beverage, will definitely be going back. Mei Lah Wah is famous for their pork buns, they just always have an insane line. If you go at an off time and the line is short, def check it out. Deluxe Green Bo- great spot for classic chinese and chinese-american dishes. This is the first place I ever ate soup dumplings and they were awesome. replying to u/rumfortheborder: charred scallion oil noodles at yozi are pretty satisfying, also the "dumplings" that are not closed, sort of like a fried row of chinese dumpling skin tacos-i thought it looked like a chain, but they told me it wasnt. where are the other ones? what is an example of a good XLB? i have enjoyed soup dumplings at both yozi and shanghai dumpling (in fei long) so i'm interested in what you think is excellent. love Kai feng fu for fried dumplings. in the neighborhood i generally hit park asia, dun huang, little thanh da, wong wong noodle. what am i missing out on????
