replying to u/thats-gold-jerry: People will shit on Sugarfish. Don’t listen to them. Go if you’ve never been. Someone will say something annoying to this comment. Just ignore it, Reddit is predictable. You could also check out their handroll spot, Kazunori. Go to Four Horsemen; it is incredible. Get there right at 5 for a walk in. Reservations are difficult. Other places I’d recommend are Tolo (Chinese), Yellow Rose (Tex Mex), Union Square Cafe (American), S&P (Jewish Deli), Birds of a Feather (Szechuan), COTE (Korean steakhouse), Soothr (Thai), Uncle Lou (Chinese) and Emmett’s on Grove for tavern style pizza.

Not "orange chicken and crab rangoon" level, but it still feels catered to an almost exclusively American audience. Most of the dishes they serve may actually hail from China, but seem to be prepared in a way that appeals much more to the American palette

replying to u/irieriley: For another insanely good meal with low hype in that area, I can't recommend Hupo in LIC highly enough. Everyone loves Birds of a Feather (and it is very good) but Hupo does every dish a little bit better and without the need to book way in advance

I’ve been disappointed by all of the new wave Taiwanese/Chinese spots I’ve tried, Winson X 2 and wenwen in Greenpoint. Wanted to try Bonnie’s but figured it would probably be similar. I can get better food that’s more authentic and is much cheaper in Flushing etc. Underrated- Manducatis in Long Island City!! And Bahari in Astoria
