  • replying to u/trey1928: I’ve had good hand rolls before, but I will say that Mari, the Korean hand roll spot here that has a Michelin star is shockingly mid. The spicy tuna was incredible but nothing else was amazing except the deserts. Fish wasn’t very fresh

I had my handroll from Kazu Nori the sister company of Sugarfish. But I fell you, fish doesn't feel fresh... Feels like they made the fish into a "paste" just to mix it with other sauces to hide the un-freshness of the fish!

I work near kazu nori so I order the sushi they do to go sometimes (not hand rolls) and it’s kinda inconsistent. Sometimes it’s fire but last time I got it the tuna was so fishy I couldn’t finish it. But the lobster and crab was good.

  • Kazunori has gone so downhill recently - half the fish pastes are indistinguishable from one another and super bland. The rice is still good and warm, but I can do such a better job making hand rolls at home it’s really not worth going anymore.

  • replying to u/LurkerReadyFire: Not sure why everyone's downvoting the Sugarfish/Kazunori recs. It's really good sushi for ~$60. I don't even consider it omakase - it's basically the same set menu, not a chef handing you individual pieces across the counter and mumbling about the origin. But to OP, I'm also an LA migrant (10yrs in NYC) and live in lower Manhattan. Katsuei and Mercer are great

Poorly cut boring fish that’s way too cold. Bland rice that’s way too hot. Albacore tuna? It’s aggressively bad

  • similar vibes, but i like kazunori much more than sugarfish. it's hand rolls, fast paced, but very stable quality

  • KazuNori for one of the best values for hand rolls in the city

I tried 6 rolls at Kazu Nori and they all tasted the same.

  • KazuNori is also excellent even if it’s hand rolls, same ownership but a different experience.

  • replying to u/Federal-Log176: - Bar Pitti: penne alla vodka - Keens: mutton chop - Piccola Cuccino: langoustine pasta - Au Cheval: prime rib sandwich - Oyster Bar: oyster stew - Kazunori: scallop hand roll - Balthazar: French onion soup - Red Hook Tavern: burger

I feel like kazunori catches some shit among the nyc foodie community but I will die on the hill of defending the scallop hand roll in particular.

  • Japanese Handroll bar that won't break the bank (5 rolls for $29 or 6 for $34). Also counter seating, so being solo is an advantage.

  • replying to u/Friedchicken747: Thank you for the extensive list, very much appreciated! Will definitely be going to a few of these. Btw Katz has been on our list from the first time we visited the city but we never got around to it and felt it may just be overhyped, but are for sure intending to find out for ourselves this time around

  • replying to u/Immiscible: There's many very good sushi spots in New York, I don't really agree with the sugarfish rec. If the appeal is no reservations for a flexible planning night, I'd just do Kazunori. Even that isn't incredible, but I've found it enjoyable and a fun experience with a line that's moving pretty quick even in a busy night. Otherwise there's omakase places that blow sugarfish out of the water at similar prices. It's absolutely not bad but look at this guys other restaurants. It is certainly the odd one out and won't live up to the places that he's interested in.

nami nori > kazunori for hand rolls imo

  • In short, it’s a cheapish assemblyline version of the omakase sushi experience, designed to blow the minds of people who only know crappy sushi.

  • replying to u/senorbongocat: Ichiran - ramen. You can sit in a solo dining booth

Pretty good hand-rolled sushi, but casual counter seating.

  • replying to u/akmalhot: Kazunori- someone explain it to me. Maybe I just don't want a hand roll forward meal, but there's always such a line. Meal also felt a little bit like an assembly line .

Better than the average fast food chain.

  • replying to u/ervsve: Yeah, as a nerd who’s visited Tsukiji multiple times (both before and after the move), it’s always hard for me to get excited about sushi in NYC. Honestly, when I’m in a sushi mood these days, I usually just hit up Sugarfish or KazuNori—yeah, I know, basic bitch vibes. I get that it’s not omakase, but to me, omakase should be reserved for special occasions. I don’t need the whole song and dance every time—just give me delicious fish and a cold beer, and I’m happy.

Every single Japanese Coworker I have told me either stick to handroll bars like KazuNori or just shell out for the 200$+ Omakase places.

  • replying to u/TrainingScared1705: Honestly sugarfish & kazu nori (both of which are also in LA obv) are some of the best in NYC. Sushi hatsune is also very good

  • replying to u/kingsizeddabs: I tried Sugarfish years ago in LA and was severely under impressed, haven't had it since but I do frequent KazuNori, their 28th street location as much as I can. They're owned by the same people but every single time I'm there it's always great, and fresh. Hits the spot every single time. It's affordable and the no tipping policy is a huge plus IMO.

I liked sugar fish than kn for a cheap fix.

  • replying to u/Brooklyn-Epoxy: Sugarfish is excellent value with their less expensive “Trust me” menu. I know it's not proper, but I love it.

I personally like Kazunori a lot more since the extra nori masks the rice a bit better

  • replying to u/panzerxiii: LA transplant spot run by Sugarfish that gets hyped by people who don't know how to not just go to the most surface level and easily accessible spot

This. Kazunori and Sugarfish are so mid compared to the affordable omakase scene hee

  • Agreed on skipping KazuNori unless you need a quick bite and there’s no line.
