  • The “trust me”, which is basically just their omakase, is affordable, delicious and leans into more approachable types of fish (think tuna, salmon, crab). It’s got a dark, ambient atmosphere and generally is just really solid.

  • The rice is really REALLY bad. Overcooked so much that it's mushy and overseasoned with vinegar, which takes away a lot of the fish. I've had better sushi rice from Wholefoods.

  • replying to u/cinnamonrain: The rice game in nyc is terrible, everything falls apart into scrambles the moment soy sauce is introduced Ive tried a reasonable range of omakases $50 - $200 pp But my go to rec at the end of the day would be sugarfish Not crazy expensive, pretty thick fish, but it still has sucky rice game like everywhere else

Ngl, Sugarfish is one of the worst omakases I’ve ever had. The price is good but the fish was poorly and hastily sliced, rice was weirdly seasoned and literally crumbled apart at the touch.

  • It’s not even good for the price point. You’re better off getting a sushi set at Kanoyama, Hasaki or Dairo. I’ve been to sugar fish a few times. Rice was always mushy and hot (not warm) and the fish way too cold. Too much ponzu sauce. The selection of fish is also pretty boring as well.

  • replying to u/JayMoots: Don't let some of the snobs around here shame you for liking Sugarfish. It's a completely valid entry point to omakase. It kind of bridges the gap between your neighborhood California roll slinger and the $200+ sushi shrines. (My one issue with Sugarfish is the consistency isn't great. I've gone about 4-5 times and my meals have ranged from *excellent* to *just okay*.) A good next stop for you might be one of the more reasonably-priced omakase spots, like Sushi Katsuei.

I think overall for the value its great.

  • Rice game sucks (it falls apart super easily) But their fish is impressively thick. Ive gone three times and i think for the price its probably one of the best value oriented omakases ive had

  • replying to u/bruiserbrody45: I could see arguing preferring two 200-300 range omakases to one $500 omakase but sugar fish is incomparable to a $400 omakase. If you're interested in trying premium fish there are much better options than sugarfish at that price range. Understand you did say this was unpopular.

Sugar fish is amateur hour. I hate the warm sushi. Pre-plated omakase in a stack in the kitchen.

  • But it feels pretty generic and corporate, and it’s within $10 for a similar quantity of Omakase at local joints that I prefer. I’ve also had issues with the pieces being massively over sauced, which throws the whole balance off

  • replying to u/lurkerprofile26: Strong disagree, the most consistent sushi experience and truly high quality every time!

It’s consistently mediocre in the same way that same way that other chain restaurants are. Not “bad” per se but it is catering to people who don’t actually like the idea of raw fish and vinegared rice. The fish tastes indistinct and everything is just dreadfully underseasoned

  • I went once because it was so hyped up. was very disappointed. My rice was also falling apart and just looked sloppy.

  • replying to u/extravirginguy: sugar fish is recommended everywhere but i wasn’t sure if it was because of good marketing or if people actually liked it thank you for the rec

It’s great sushi for the price and service. They don’t push alcohol on you and they’re great with dietary restrictions. Also they have an excellent toro tasting set.

  • replying to u/LurkerReadyFire: Not sure why everyone's downvoting the Sugarfish/Kazunori recs. It's really good sushi for ~$60. I don't even consider it omakase - it's basically the same set menu, not a chef handing you individual pieces across the counter and mumbling about the origin. But to OP, I'm also an LA migrant (10yrs in NYC) and live in lower Manhattan. Katsuei and Mercer are great

Poorly cut boring fish that’s way too cold. Bland rice that’s way too hot. Albacore tuna? It’s aggressively bad

  • replying to u/_pinay_: Sugarfish’s UWS location :( I know the restaurant there is new and still getting started; however the fish still tasted partially frozen and low flavor. I’ve gone to many sugarfish locations across CA / NY and left disappointed.

The food was abysmal. Every single dish looked like a mess and had fallen apart by the time it was thrown onto our table. I will never ever go back there.

  • I love Sugarfish. Every time I have gone the food has been consistently good - and this is across multiple locations both here and in LA.

  • It’s a good low-cost, low-pressure environment for people whose exposure to sushi was previously drowning California rolls in wasabi gari soy sauce soup and want a step up from that but are intimidated by the cost or experience of an omakase.

  • It was really high quality fish. I am not much of a sushi lover but my partner is. I loved their tuna with ponzu and scallions. We also had their nigori which was great. Experience and service was lovely and so was atmosphere.

  • I lived in Tokyo for a decade and I think it’s fine. Perfectly adequate. Not the freshest or most authentic but good for the price.

  • replying to u/thats-gold-jerry: I don’t care what anyone says. I love Sugarfish. They’re all still really crowded besides the Brooklyn location so the hate hasn’t really had much impact.

Same, I’m an ardent Sugarfish defender - sure it’s not anywhere near the same caliber as an authentic omakase bar, but also, that’s not what it’s trying to be. It’s great for the price and what it is

  • It was horrible. Like comically bad. I did Omakase and paid but dipped out after the 3rd course.

  • replying to u/LonghorninNYC: I lived in Tokyo for a decade and I think it’s fine. Perfectly adequate. Not the freshest or most authentic but good for the price. I wouldn’t choose it myself but would happily go if invited. People need to simmer down.

it’s very solid for the price and I enjoy going

Rice is also way too hot and the fish is ice cold. Sloppy presentation too.

  • replying to u/biznisss: I think there are some quality control issues with people having inconsistent experiences on one hand. On the other, it seems many go expecting the type of fantasy omakase experience where you work through a series of courses curated by an artisan that's been refining their craft for decades or something like that and that's just not really what SF does. I would group them with like a Smith & Wollensky, Nobu or Ocean Prime or something like that rather than with other omakase restaurants in that they are taking sort of an unadorned or anodyne approach with good quality ingredients to pick up a steady flow of expensed meals.

It’s also much better relatively when you realize you should be comparing it with the standard sushi spot you would get for lunch or a quick dinner rather than an elevated or high end Omakase place.

  • I don't fully get the hate either, but I can say that there has definitely been an explosion in "affordable" omakase around the city now where you can get more courses, same quality, and cooler atmosphere

  • And sorry, but for me Sugarfish is a very good quality affordable sushi binge.

  • replying to u/234W44: I've had sushi in many places. Lots of Omakase. From Nakazawa from actually having the many different versions of it in Japan. And there are many differences even then. I have to say that I like Sugarfish as I like an occasional chicken sandwich at Shake Shack. It has never been as bad as you describe it. Maybe a bad day? I would have told them that the rice was off. They would have redone it. And sorry, but for me Sugarfish is a very good quality affordable sushi binge. I've had it in many places in Los Angeles and in the four locations in Manhattan (is there five now?)

But I do know my sushi 🍣. And I found sugarfish to be an amazing value for what you get.

I had lunch there few weeks ago in midtown and the rice was hot and crumbled as I tried to pick it up.
