  • Genuinely AMAZING bagels, so fresh and hot. I love the unorthodox rip and dip style of it. Each bite was amazing.

  • hands down best bagels we have ever had. Warm, slightly crispy exterior with the dense, satisfyingly chewy interior.

  • replying to u/Thick-Definition7416: I would’ve swapped them in and pop up out

Pop up bagel is awful. There, I said it. Once their bagels are cool, they're just aggressively sad bread. No crunch, no substance, and tiny dainty bagels.

  • replying to u/Weekly-Original-2322: PopUp Bagels sells 3 bagels and a smallish tub of scallion cream cheese for $13. This is the smallest option available. They don’t sell just bagels.

    it did smell really good

  • replying to u/Thick-Definition7416: Why are people going to pop up bagels in nyc of all places?!

I don’t get the hate for it tbh. One opened up in UES and it’s definitely the best bagel shop I’ve been to in the area, as long as you’re not looking for a full sandwich.

  • replying to u/Unlikely-Ad-1677: I don’t like bagels that are huge and bread like, might as well eat a roll.

That's not what these bagels are like. They're light and hot and fresh with a crisp outside and a slightly chewy inside.

  • replying to u/JayMoots: Pop Up is pretty legit. Lots of annoying quirks (long lines, no sandwiches, only available for purchase in increments of 3) but one of the most satisfying bagels I've had in my entire life. Tompkins Square is probably my second favorite at the moment. I used to be a Murray's die-hard, but they've slipped a bit the last few times I've gone. Still way above average, but not as good as they used to be.

Pop Up bagel shouldn't even be considered a bagel. They won't give you a single bagel, they won't cut it, and most importantly the texture isn't right. They can pay as many influencers as they want, but that place doesn't deserve to be called an NYC bagel shop

  • Pop up is better than 95% of those places, but many people on Reddit are fundamentally anti-growth, so expansion = bad.

  • Popup bagels was so mediocre. We had them fresh and they were salty as hell and nothing home to ride home about. Cream cheese wasn’t good either and like a brick.

  • replying to u/swaglessnseattle: As someone who really loves pop up bagels, I do have to ask if you tried them while fresh / hot before coming to this conclusion..

Pop-up bagels aren't even good later in the same day. They're tiktoks idea of a bagel. Good in the moment but extremely fleeting.

  • replying to u/kmpham2013: Popup Bagels We got an everything bagel, poppy seed bagel, and sesame bagel with my preferences in that order. Crisp, light and airy, and chewy when it counts, this bagel really is optimized for the rip-and-dip. Super easy to pull apart with your hands unlike the denser bagel style and the size is small enough so that you can scoop up as much cream cheese as the bagel will hold without getting a stomach ache. Maybe the everything bagel was fresher, but the exterior was really bubbly and super crisp. I felt like I was biting into a lays potato chip when I sunk my teeth into that one. The other two were also great but less impressive than the everything bagel. I think I wish the sesames were more toasted because they didn’t impart much special flavor to the bagel.

Their topping adherence and crust are pretty top notch.

The bagels I got were also literally right out of the oven and I appreciated how fresh they were 🙂

  • replying to u/VritraReiRei: Pop Up? I've seen that franchise in multiple spots but typically steer away from franchises. Is that a good recommendation?

And it turns out, there's really not much flavor in them.

  • They aren’t bagels. They’re crusty rolls with holes poked into them baked on sheet pans instead of bagel boards.

Popup bagel is trendy and meh. They're too small, and they don't really have a good texture, not to mention their choices of toppings is pretty lackluster.

  • replying to u/True-Complaint6899: Ooo, thank you for that. I am going with my bf so he could get some too. Is it worth it to order 12 online?

They're also very much non-traditional bagels, but they're certainly good for what they are. They nail the crust and topping distribution, but they're super fluffy, which is weird, but then they lean into it with the expectation that you're going to be ripping them apart instead of slicing. Certainly worth doing if it's nice out.

  • replying to u/TransportationOk5961: Popup Bagel in sesame

Popup is just so damn good because you see like 30 of them come out of the oven every few minutes, and can literally ask “which came out most recently?”

  • Literally always hot and fresh out of the oven. It’s a rip and dip situation so you get as much (or little) cream cheese as you’d like. Rotating cast of special cream cheeses are fun too.

  • replying to u/JustBrosDocking: Is it better than Absolute in UWS?

Yes! Significantly better. The only downside is they don’t do bagel sandwiches, just the whole bagel + a tub of cream cheese on the side. But on the other hand that ensures you have the absolute freshest bagel. They’re literally steaming when you get them.

  • Pop Up Bagels - so much hype, and it boggles the mind when there are real NYC bagels at any corner deli. Yes it’s nice to eat a hot bagel, but if you let it cool down you’ll realize it actually just tastes/chews like round bread, it is not a real bagel

  • I agree though they are fluffier than a bagel is supposed to be. But perhaps because they are designed for that rip-and-dip? Also, flavor is fairly light, but they do have flavor. The seasonings are well-proportioned, really liked the poppyseed.

  • replying to u/sophiajazze89: Oh my goodness i was just about to come on here to express the same intense disappointment! i don’t usually treat food as a souvenir to bring back to family and friends, but i had faith in their hotel butter. my friend once introduced me to it and trying it for the first time was genuinely life-changing so i knew i needed to get my hands on some this time. I had so much faith that it would be just as good that i bought tubs and tubs of it this weekend, just to open and see an overwhelming green colour! HORRIFYING.  if you search up hotel butter, the green is occasional in a sea of yellow, but this butter was basically fully green. What????????? Plus all i could taste was mustard. straight up felt like i was eating mustard on bagels which was NOT the experience i was looking for.  Disappointed would be an understatement. I now need to warn my friends and family so they dont think i’m insane for claiming this butter was life-changing. Pop-up bagels, DO BETTER!!

the flavor of the cream cheese is flat and the texture of the bagels is very dense...almost like they are rushing the fermentation or something? It's not the same. There's no use in expanding something that's worse to a mass market if people who used to like your product stop buying it.

  • Pop up bagels really is the best - they constantly make bagels throughout the day so you are always getting a piping hot bagel…just fantastic

  • I found the salt bagel way too salty, but the everything was amazing

    H2

  • Amazing for what it was. We both loved the rip and dip but I personally thought it was a little basic.

    H2

  • We ended up really loving these though. The everything bagel was our favorite dipped in that fluffy scallion cream cheese.

  • I know there are varying opinions in this sub but these were great. The sesame was the best out of the three.

    H2

  • PopUp Bagels has mastered the art of the gimmick, though - I'm very biased towards them, but I hate cream cheese, yet loved the cheesecake schmear.

  • Great snack. Great novelty. Love a warm bagel. But it’s not a bagel breakfast destination for me.

    H2

  • Felt that they were overrated tbh — texturally just like a roll of bread and also didn’t have much flavor.

it was never good. it's hole-poked bread, not a bagel.

  • replying to u/Evolution1313: Im always fucking shocked people recommend Jacob’s pickles. It’s like… basic ass brunch and comfort food. A decent place to bring your unadventurous eater parents if you live nearby

Popup bagels are like a new and improved fresh version of all the plastic bag bagels midwesterns had and are now forcing the hand of bagels to change to the preference.

  • replying to u/JayMoots: It's very good but you gotta be careful posting about this place. All the bagel gatekeepers are going to jump in here to tell you that it's not a "real" bagel.

i believe pop-up bagels should be sued into extinction and ignominity

  • replying to u/Alternative-Sea7228: What would you skip? I would have done Uncle Lou’s instead of Wo Hop but it was closed. Zimmi’s was ok but not a favourite.

Popup, for me, isn’t really a bagel.
