The and the peanut butter louis get named constantly, and the and list are just as strong. The is the gamble. It's charcoal grilled and excellent when it lands, but plenty of people got theirs chewy, cold, or under what they ordered, so order a step more done than usual. The weekday lunch with is the cheap way in.

  • Last time I went, they screwed up our service so bad they offered us comps. When the bill came there were no comps and the servers actively avoided us.

  • Some parts of both of our steaks were truly inedible. Impossibly chewy. I have never had to pull an unchewable part of a steak out of my mouth at a steakhouse.

  • Side note we got the porterhouse which was cooked perfectly, the wine was good and the dining room was gorgeous. Not a place to go looking for value as our bill was around $350 for splitting a steak and some sides but all around very good.

  • Come here for lunch every time I visit NY and it’s always been excellent. Massive fan of the rump steak done rare.

  • replying to u/andthrewaway1: I like keens for the ambiance. but think hawksmoor has better steak. Don't sleep on old homestead I think they have very nice cuts though they charged me like 8 dollars for soda water from the gun after I had bought a very expensive bourbon

found it very average in terms of food and poor in terms of value. The Cesar salad was a loveless and chaotic arrangement of massive leaves of romaine with some sad dressing. The bone marrow was served almost cold and was unimaginative. The ribeye was average.

  • replying to u/Garconavecunreve: If you want the classic nyc steakhouse experience: keens, gallaghers or gage&tollner Best meat: quality meats, cote, Hawksmoor Great places overall: st Anselm, the grill, 4 Charles, La Tete d or

I went to Hawksmoor a couple of days ago and was completely unimpressed with the meat. I got a stringy, underseasoned ribeye that was not cooked to my specification (asked for medium, got rare/medium rare.) I’d sooner send someone to literally any of the other options.

  • The rump is fine. Similar to strip but only slightly chewier and less fatty. Unlike most places they do dry-age the rump offered in the lunch special as well, so it is a good way to try their steak while staying within a budget.
