I'm in Williamsburg so I'll just throw out a few in my neck of the woods: Leroy's, Teddy's, Kent Ale House, Dolly's. Every neighborhood should have a few places in this category! For example, I had a nice solo dinner / convo with the bartenders at Caledonia Bar on the Upper West Side when I was dogsitting for my uncle. Just searched "pubs" and this was the first one that came up.
