↳replying to u/Delicious_Adeptness9: I always thought Reubens are such a paradox. The most unkosher, yet the most Jewish-sounding! Of course, some places will have a kosher-style "Rachel" in its place.
I wonder why Ben's in Midtown wasn't featured in the article. It opened in 1972 and has always been kosher as well. Last year, it was taken over by/merged with Mr. Broadway, so now it's even glatt and closed on Saturdays, where it had been previously open 7 days a week. There are still other Ben's locations in Queens, Long Island, and Boca Raton.
There are a few more certified kosher Jewish delis in outer boroughs. Sadly, Ben's Best in Rego Park/Forest Hills closed about 5 years ago, so Queens is sorely lacking Jewish delis besides Ben's (unrelated) in Bayside. In Brooklyn, Jay & Lloyd's bit the dust in 2020. Though, there's still Gottlieb's in Williamsburg, Mill Basin Deli, and Essen in Midwood. In Riverdale, Liebman's is still holding it down.
“I definitely like Ben's--grew up near one on LI and would occasionally go to the midtown one when I worked in the area. My faves there are the pastrami, tongue, Romanian steak, mushroom barley soup, and Oriental chicken salad. And of course they have great cole slaw.”
