Despite some of the comments, most coffee in the city is still a dark or medium-dark roast. The tendencies of New Yorkers is to favor a chocolatey, darker roast espresso and coffee. I will say also that the opposite site, anywhere that serves la colombe is not going to be an enjoyable experience. These are places like remi, birch coffee, and many more. For Five roasters is also very widespread and is more your speed, and slightly better. You can find them in bagel shops like new york coffee and bagel house (a small chain). Everyman, café grumpy, maybe madman, anywhere that is using distressed wood as a part of the décor is a good bet. Let me know what you think.

I tried Birch many times and it's as sour as the rest of them imo. Sounds like you're suggesting going by vibe and decor, that seems like a good idea.
