replying to u/AccomplishedRoof5983: Bar San Miguel on Smith/Union was a pleasant surprise yesterday. Octopus & Chorizo Tacos, and Grilled Shrimp tacos. Negra Modelo Michelada and Hibiscus Mezcalita, the bar recommended a mezcal to finish. It all tasted very fresh and nicely seasoned. Then there's Claro, which will blow your mind.

“So I'll recommend an alternate: Lobo in Cobble Hill. They claim to be an Okie-Mex restaurant (they serve the always elusive chicken-fried steak), but as a Midwestern-transplant going on 20 years here in NYC, these are my early-90's/regional chain nachos of my childhood.”

replying to u/joeyfosho: The lack of true TexMex here is one of the worst parts of the city. Some places claim to be, but they’re either too fancy or too authentically Mexican. I want cheap, basic TexMex food that I can smother in queso and that reminds me of being south of the Mason Dixon. For whatever reason nobody in the city can do it. We lost the chains in Covid that kind of fit the bill. (RIP Moe’s, Chevy’s, and Blockheads…)
