replying to u/cloud_busting: Gargiulo's used to be THE spot in the 80s and 90s. Every Italian in Bensonhurst/Bath Beach had a baptism or communion or engagement party there. It was a vibe and the food was great! It has gone WAY downhill.

It was a half assed catering hall (service was very nice to be fair!) but the food was abysmal. Everything was drowning in grey flavorless liquid, including the baked clams. I asked for some extra lemon for my veal picatta. The waiter eventually scrounged some lemon slices from the bar and presented them on a paper napkin. It was comically awful. I have lived in NYC for decades. Gargiulo's will always stand out as one of my worst dining experiences ever.

replying to u/ScenicMirror: It's amazing to me how shitty the food at Coney Island is. It seems like a spot where if one place opened that was consistently excellent it would force the others to up their game. Dona Zita is killer though, but tucked away off the boardwalk
