replying to u/ApatheticAbsurdist: I used to work in the area so I'm a little more low key and thinner wallet than Le Bernadin. There's a number of old school Japanese places worth taking a look at: Katsu-Hama - Japanese place that specializes in Tonkatsu fried pork cutlets, very good. Kinda feels like a salary mans stop out of some story in Tokyo Restaurant Nippon - Very old school, run by the family place has been around forever and very good Japanese cooking a little fancier than Katsu-Hama, but not really over the top or terribly expensive. Hatsu-Hana - a little higher end than the other two, old school sushi restaurant that is very solid. They do a "box of dreams" that is 9 pieces in a nice presentation. Mala Project - A little more modern Chinese dry pot with a good bar. La Bonne Soup - Old school French bistro that I've been going to for 25 years, good typical French bistro food. When I was a young college student the Prix Fix was great cause it was pretty reasonable and even included a glass of wine. It's still not horrible for post-covid NYC prices. Urbanspace and Urbanhawker are food courts with a lot of options. Shame the Carnegie Deli is gone...

replying to u/PopcornKiki: around midtown 36th to 39th street, there are Er Hot Pot and Three Hot Pot by the same owner, there is also Mala Hot Pot which is authentic as well.

replying to u/Frosty-Cheetah-7233: For shabu shabu, your best bet is going downtown. I’d recommend either Kimura or Shabu Tatsu. Both are located in St Marks which is a younger neighborhood for college students but has a lot of great food options. In the same neighborhood you’ll find the Dolar Shop for hot pot. If you do end up in the area, there’s great dessert spots! However, for hot pot I’d recommend going to Chinatown. I’d recommend Lao Jie Hot Pot, Hometown Hot Pot or 99 Favor. Similar to St Marks it could be a fun neighborhood for you to both explore. Agreed with the other posters recommendation of Mala Project which is dry pot (no broth, it’s stir fried in the kitchen so a different experience from hot pot / shabu shabu where the food cooks in front of you). They have multiple locations including two in midtown so closer to the UWS. Enjoy your trip!
