replying to u/VeryPuffin: Not the answer you’re looking for, and I truly wouldn’t suggest this for any other dish basically. But if you’re nearby a Japanese market, just buy sashimi grade fish and cut them up and put them atop some sushi rice. It’s really one of the easiest dishes you could make esp if you have a rice cooker. I say this cuz I loved kaisen don when I lived in Japan and +1 Kaoru in Midtown East is the best I’ve had in NYC, but it’s not cheap by any means and the amount of fish/roes just wasn’t enough imo (at least the ones I got wasn’t, you still see a big ring of rice around the fish). I’d often make my own, top off with a ton of fish, way more satisfying than the restaurant ones, come out cheaper too. All my friends ask me on insta saying they need to know which restaurant it’s from.
