Get the . People who have eaten them in Shanghai say these are the closest in the city, though the dough is a touch thick. The is the soupiest version regulars have found here. It's reasonably priced for the area, near Port Authority, and open late enough for a post theater snack.

  • replying to u/twotoasters: I really the shengjian bao at Shanghai Time. I haven’t tried Nan Xiang Express specifically but have enjoyed the xiao long bao at Nan Xiang XLB

Really everything Shanghainese at Shanghai Time is legit. The shengjian bao is the closest thing I've had outside of Shanghai. Not quite perfect, like the dough is slightly too leavened, but really close.

  • Our favorite find of the trip. Open super late (I think we were there close to midnight), and everything we ate was delicious!! The pan-fried pork buns were so freaking juicy. This will be our new post-theater snack spot.

Shanghai Time is really great. The sheng jian bao are amazing, frankly everything I’ve tried there (been 20+ times over the past few years) is really good.

  • replying to u/LoriJayneNYC: Try Shanghai Time on 38th in the city for xlb or their best soup dumpling variety is the pan fried aka shenxiangbao they make the soupiest best ones I’ve found in town. So good.

I was surprised by their quality actually. I only visited because it was near work but definitely one of the best shenxiangbao I had.

It is so hard to find good shengjian bao, theirs is my favorite in NYC. They also have this pork soup with bamboo shoots and tofu knots that I love, very homey and comforting
