  • replying to u/PinguinusImperialis: Two questions: How important is paella? It's really specialized to Valencia. Many Spanish restaurants in the city may feature it to appease expectations but they still won't do it well. For paella: * Unfortunately Casa Dani closed. La Nacional may be the next best paella up. A hell no for Socarrat. Bad food and ownership, but that's another story. For nonValencian but incredible Spanish food unlikely to have paella: * Tomino Taberna Gallega has incredible Galician food. They have an arroz caldoso that is different kind of seafood rice dish more on the soupy side. * Tixikito for basque food. I don't recall anything remotely close but I'm going to guess and say it's unlikely they have it. Don't fk with basque cuisine. Just eat their pintxos as is and be happy. * Casa Mono. Just had an incredible meal here. But again, more small bites. I doubt they'll have paella. * Salinas is stunning inside. One of the prettier places in the city imo. Good food as well. Don't recall paella. * Boqueria has paella. But it's very low on the list. Better for a drink and tapas in a pinch, but not a destination to go to. Wouldn't call it upscale. * Mercado Little Spain might have it? I still think of it more for tapas. Last question: if paella is non-negotiable, would you venture to the ironbound in Newark?

agreed on La Nacional for paella.

  • replying to u/teapcupcerberus: If you can, I’d recommend La Nacional over both of these! Traditional tapas under the Spanish Benevolent society.

I've been there! The food was excellent, even the simple things like the bread with tomato was so good.

  • I like the gambas al ajillo at La Nacional if you’re interested in taking him to tapas!
