replying to u/AgentSterling_Archer: California (and midwest, but mainly CA) transplants trying to whitesplain Mexican food is honestly pretty funny, both on here and irl. The Mexican population in NYC is primarily from Puebla (as in it's even a meme in the form of Puebla York) and they do not focus so heavily on tacos and burritos but rather guisados (entrees) generally. So when I see yet another "omg guyz mexican food so ass in nyc" post by which they mean the tacos and burritos aren't exactly all they've had in their local strip mall and just screams that the translucent person on the other side has probably not even had a chile relleno before. Also my other unpopular opinion is that Cocina Consuelo is wildly overhyped after trying it twice. Service is nice but I was still starving after spending 180+tip on food and drinks for two people - the drinks tasted like watered-down juice with not even a hint of alcohol bite and the food itself was done well technically but I had tastier birria at Birrialandia, tastier ceviche at Mariscos Los Submarinos, and tastier mole at Calavera, in bigger portions for far cheaper.

replying to u/An-Anxious-Being: Ooooh Chavela’s in Crown Heights is one of my go-tos for when people come to visit! In Manhattan, I love to go to Le Grande Boucherie because the food, wine/drinks, and service are amazing and the venue itself is so beautiful. I’m not sure if that one is considered touristy or not though, but it’s one of my favorites. Also, someone mentioned it, but Tasty Hand Pulled Noodle! It’s so simple but the people who work there are so kind, and my friend loved seeing the chef make the noodles in the back. IMO it’s a better option than some of the better known Chinatown spots like Wo Hop (which tbh I thought was good but didn’t live up to the hype) and Apoteke is right there for a cocktail and live music after!
