    replying to u/helplessintheus: Don't know how I missed those posts! Saw the least favorite threads, but not the favorites, so I'll go through those for sure. Thanks for the other recs too. I actually went to TabeTomo on their $5 reopening night thanks to this subreddit and it was excellent. Gonna add the others to my list as well, especially Third Kingdom for the vegan food. I live and work in north BK so I'm usually in the LIC/Ridgewood/Flatbush/Gowanus square of Brooklyn and parts of Queens. I'm totally down to venture out though, especially once it gets a little warmer. From other people's posts, it seems like I'm gonna be headed to Jackson Heights at least once or twice for food.

    replying to u/killingit0925: I don’t think it’s exactly a food haven, but I think LIC is more hated on than deserved For a restaurant with fewer options, it has a bunch of gems: Hibino for delicious Japanese and reasonable prices, Jora for awesome Peruvian and vibes, Sami’s Kebab for killer Afghan (I know the original is in Astoria), R40 for Argentinian and mouthwatering empanadas, Casa Enrique which USED to be the most reasonably priced Michelin starred restaurant and has a great mole, Inkan for more casual Peruvian and addicting rice and beans, Turk Tuk for comfort Americanized Thai I expected to have to venture to Astoria every weekend for food after reading how LIC was talked about on this sub, but it’s not bad

    replying to u/Adodie: It still is far from the same level of many other NYC neighborhoods, but as you note, definitely a growing scene here. Some restaurants I like quite well: * Adda * Jora * Hupo * Casa Enrique (former Michelin restaurant -- I like it, but think the loss of its star was definitely deserved) * Safir Mediteranean fwiw, I live around the Vernon Blvd area, so my experience is definitely tilted towards there and not able to speak as well to other parts of LIC

    replying to u/Deskydesk: I’m a big fan of Hupo. I think LIc gets hate for the lack of bars/hip destination places but even that isn’t quite right - Adda is there, and Dutch Kills. It’s just not packed with places like other neighborhoods.

    replying to u/grusauskj: Yeah you nailed it. Despite what you read on this sub, I think it’s safe to say the vast majority of locals also avoid the hype spots. We all have our local gems that don’t quite go viral on instagram. Here’s a random one, a top 5 meal I’ve had in the last year: KJUN, Korean-Cajun fusion in midtown east. The food is super creative and every dish has a unique flavor. It fits like 10 people at a time, you can taste the love in that place. Here’s another: Cafe Henri in Long Island city. Unassuming small French cafe that nails every dish they serve. Prob my favorite eggs Benedict in the city. Then go to Takumen down the street for some matcha soft serve and take a walk through Hunters Point park. Way too many options out there to wait in a hyped up line (although Radio Bakery is really good I must say)

    replying to u/jt92: I’m no expert on cocktail bars, but I’ll offer some more wide ranging bar recommendations. Note that I mostly dwell in Brooklyn and Queens. Travel Bar in Carroll Gardens. Incredible selection of limited release whiskeys. Be prepared to blow $200 on six ounces of booze that you’ll never be able to find again because most of the bottles here are probably made up anyway. Fresh Kills in Williamsburg. Admittedly, it does have huge hype. The last five years, I’ve only been able to get in on weekdays as soon as they open at 5 PM. However, it was the first bar where I realized there is something more to cocktails than vodka, OJ, and ice. We all have a soft spot for our first. They also have the second best bathroom in NYC (I give first to Oceans on Park Ave). Tørst in Greenpoint. My favorite beer bar. Also, I love typing the ‘ø’. Alma Negra in Southwest Slope. NYC has picked up some great mezcalerias in the last decade and I wanted to put one on the list. I gave them the nod over other places with great mezcal selections because the bartender here was the most passionate and knowledgeable mezcal enthusiast I’ve encountered. Rolo’s AND Hellbender Nighttime Cafe in Ridgewood. Sister restaurant bars. It’s rude to pick a favorite sibling, so let’s put both on the list to be amicable. Rockaway Tiki Bar in Arverne.     replying to u/irieriley: For another insanely good meal with low hype in that area, I can't recommend Hupo in LIC highly enough. Everyone loves Birds of a Feather (and it is very good) but Hupo does every dish a little bit better and without the need to book way in advance
