replying to u/ApatheticAbsurdist: I used to work in the area so I'm a little more low key and thinner wallet than Le Bernadin. There's a number of old school Japanese places worth taking a look at: Katsu-Hama - Japanese place that specializes in Tonkatsu fried pork cutlets, very good. Kinda feels like a salary mans stop out of some story in Tokyo Restaurant Nippon - Very old school, run by the family place has been around forever and very good Japanese cooking a little fancier than Katsu-Hama, but not really over the top or terribly expensive. Hatsu-Hana - a little higher end than the other two, old school sushi restaurant that is very solid. They do a "box of dreams" that is 9 pieces in a nice presentation. Mala Project - A little more modern Chinese dry pot with a good bar. La Bonne Soup - Old school French bistro that I've been going to for 25 years, good typical French bistro food. When I was a young college student the Prix Fix was great cause it was pretty reasonable and even included a glass of wine. It's still not horrible for post-covid NYC prices. Urbanspace and Urbanhawker are food courts with a lot of options. Shame the Carnegie Deli is gone...

replying to u/fluxural: i work in the building above urbanspace (the food hall you're referencing), it absolutely fucking sucks lol. every lunch is $25+ if you get a typical 'meal' (main item, side, drink) and the portions are very small. and yes, as you mentioned, insanely busy during lunch since it serves so many nearby offices. it's also honestly just bad food in my opinion, i'm always mindblown when i see obvious tourists or families eating there when there's so many other cheaper, high quality, larger portioned options nearby... but i guess the "novelty" of an elevated high school cafeteria is enticing. op, skip this fr lol.
