replying to u/crazeman: I still don't really understand why Hainan Chicken House is so well regarded by food critics. I've been there a few times now and it seems pretty run of the mill Malaysian food to me. Like if I live in Manhattan and have Nonya in Chinatown, I'd be pissed off if I traveled all the way to Sunset Park to basically have the same/similar chicken lol. They do used to have really interesting specials on the weekends and would post them on Instagram. It seems like the chef there are just fucking around and making cool new dishes as weekend specials but they haven't really posted anything in 2024... (Most of these critics don't really talk about the weekend specials, just the Hainanese chicken)

IMO most Char Siu tastes about the same and I haven't really had one that really stood out to me yet, but IMO the one at Hainan Chicken House stands out. I think the thing that stands out the most is that they use pork belly instead so it was deliciously fatty compared to your typical Chinese Char Siu, which normally uses Pork shoulder instead. Also be sure to check their Instagram if you plan on going. They post a lot of weekend specials that are only available for the weekend. It feels like the chefs there are experimenting with random dishes and throwing them in as the weekend special but some of them look/sound really good and interesting.

replying to u/crazeman: In the other thread, someone recommended King's Kitchen. IMO that's kind of a "boring" choice because they have a location in every Chinatown (besides for Flushing) so you can probably try them whenever. I usually end up getting the casserole/clay pot dishes over the roasted meats whenever I'm at King's kitchen because there's not that many spots that does clay pot dishes. Personally I like: Ng's Kitchen is a hole in the wall with roasted meats, I think they are particularly good for their roast duck but their other roast meats is also good. They used to be a stall in the Fei Long food court before they closed during COVID. Roast 28 is also pretty good for roasted meats. They used to be in Queens before they moved over to Sunset Park some years back. Hainan Chicken House deserves a shoutout. Their roast pork is more expensive than typical Chinese spots but it's pretty good and taste different. They also use a fattier cut of meat. IMO worth at least a try.

replying to u/No-Yogurtcloset2314: Hai nan chicken house in Brooklyn is pretty good. That’s their specialty. Eim khao in elmhurst too. There are a few food courts in Manhattan that have it, but I forgot their names. In general though most Malaysian restaurants offer this dish. Nyonya, pappa rich, west Malaysia. The rice is what usually hooks people because it’s cooked in the chicken fat and juices.

replying to u/crazeman: I'm going to sound like an asshole but there's really not that many cool or must hit up spots in both Brooklyn Chinatowns. Bensonhurst Chinatown is still fairly "new". I grew up there when there was 0 Chinese shops there so maybe the neighborhood is about 25 years old or so? Manhattan Chinatown is a LOT older so there's a lot more Historical, OG shops and restaurants. I live near 8th Ave now and I feel like not much stands out in 8th Ave Chinatown either. I usually rather go to Manhattan Chinatown than go down 8th Ave for Asian stuff. Some stuff I do like: 8th Ave: Ohayo is a new bakery that opened recently. Their bread looks pretty mid but they have over 20 selection of onigiris to pick from. Worth checking out if you like onigiris. Baxuyen has a great Vietnamese sandwich. I still like Banh mi Saigon in Manhattan Chinatown is better. Baxuyen is very inconsistent, you HAVE to go during the morning or lunch hours to get a good sandwich. If you go after lunch hours, the sandwiches are consistently disappointing. Yun Nan flavour garden used to be pretty unique with their Crossing the Bridge noodles, but in recent years, a lot of Yun Nan noodles places have been popping up all over, so it's much less unique.
