replying to u/srawr42: Go get some Polish food! It's not common on the West Coast, as far as I know. I like Polka Dot. Also fewer Jewish food spots on the west coast so that could be fun too. If you really want to throw her for a loop, try Shalom Japan. Also, Kellogg Diner and Rocka Rolla is a classic circuit

For example theres like ten Mexican options in LA for every one in NY but we have the inverse relationship when it comes to volume of good Dominican or Puerto Rican options. Examples: Cafe Katja for Polish food Casa Adela for Puerto Rican Mofongo Pikine for Senegalese Food Zoralie for Dominican Food The 69 Delicioso Food Truck for Colombian Taverna Kyclades for Greek Food If you go for generic New York stuff like bagels, burgers and pizza, LA already has a lot of good options for those. Although I would say NY has way higher density of good CHEAP pizza. Like LA has good artisan pizzas but if we’re talking good pizza by the slice the competition here is incomparable

Take the 7 train to Court House Square and transfer for the G to Greenpoint Ave. There's a Polish community there. My fave is Karczma. You can also check out Radio Bakery while you're there as well.

replying to u/Cat_Island: I’m an exClevelander, we also have a sizable population of Polish folks, not like you in Pittsburgh but still one of our larger ethnic groups. I’ve been I the city for almost 2 decades and still haven’t found pierogi that live up to what I grew up with in terms of taste or price. But, Streecha in the East Village has pretty damn good Ukrainian varenyky. It’s owned by a Ukrainian church and is very down to earth, cafeteria style. They changed leadership last year so idk if it’s still the same but they’re around $12/9 varenyky (smaller size) and usually they’re all potato but sometimes there are a few sauerkraut ones in the mix. They are as close to the rust belt pierogi experience as I’ve found in nyc. they’re very tasty! The stuffed cabbage there is great most days too. And the borscht. Church volunteers do the cooking so I find the nonvarenyky recipes seem to vary a little week to week. What I miss the most about the pierogi back home are the sweet cabbage filled ones the church ladies would sell frozen in big bags around lent.
