  • replying to u/onyourleftboob: $200 per person or $200 for 2 people?? Shiki omakase was high quality with a nice ambience for around $100/pp for their 17 piece set, and I think it's only $60 for their 12 piece set

I really struggled with Shiki. I wanted a more affordable omakase place, but it ended up feeling like it was neither here nor there?

  • I've tried both. They are about the same experience wise. My personal opinion is that most of the 100$ omakases really are similar quality wise

  • Tried and honestly not impressed. Your paying 65$ for 12 pieces of sushi that were pre-decided that does not show any particular creativity on sushi chefs part and no effort to really show case fish.

  • Shiki omakase for $65, yes you heard right, $65 is hands down the best one I’ve had in the city, only topped by one I had in Japan

  • replying to u/EanmundsAvenger: Tinos - great small affordable Greek spot UES. Great wine bottle shop across the street East Side Cellars Tanoshi Sushi - amazing omakase. Pricey but absolutely world class and at least you don’t have to pay corkage Wu’s Wonton King - great for groups. Very barebones but delicious Chinese. Order the suckling pig ahead of time. Everything is delicious. Just order a ton of stuff and share it all family style on lazy Susan’s in the middle of the table I haven’t been myself but also try: Astoria seafood Casa Adela Los Hermanos

adding Shiki if you want sushi but downtown and a quicker (60 Minute) omakase instead of Tanoshi’s 90 minute one.

  • replying to u/vagrantwastrel: Best traditional style and no budget restrictions would probably be Shion (my favorite), Yoshino (haven’t been but have trusted friends that strongly vouch), or Noz, but all three are an absolute fortune. I think in the mid price tier, Yasuda, Nakazawa, or Tanoshi, and for cheaper I think Shinn East is great value

I enjoyed Shiki Omakase far more than Shinn East and they're about the same price.

  • replying to u/philip1930: I've heard good things about Shiki Omakase. Haven't been yet but booked a reservation for October.

Had a pretty bad experience here, service isn’t great

  • I think Shiki does a pretty inventive one, especially their add ons after the official onakase.

  • replying to u/RedHawk02: Fwiw, I enjoyed Shiki Omakase far more than Shinn East and they're about the same price. I think those two dominate the cheaper sphere of omakase experiences but there are definitely others I'd like to try. I also love Sushi W. Wouldn't recommended Sushi Lab, Sushi by M, or Sushi by Bou although I would probably go to another Bou location for the vibes alone. They roped us into staying for drinks afterwards with a free drink and we ended up having a great conversation with the bartender and he went nearly 1:1 on offering free drinks as we were buying more.

I feel like Shiki doesn't get enough attention and Shinn East is overrated.

Then if you do add ons the price goes up significantly. In the end I calculated if you actually got the same amount of food as some of the better places you'd probably end up spending 150-160$

My first time trying omakase and thought the same.

  • Shiki omakase. 70 or something for a quick omakase. Really good

  • Four of these places, Lin, East, Shiki, 13 water I think represent everything wrong with Omakase in Manhattan as they are fairly cookie cutter menus

  • $$$: Wayan, Shiki omakase, Potluck Club, Sadelles, Song E napule, Momoya

  • their omakase is quality and has some really interesting pieces in it. Less traditional but still delicious.

Otherwise, Shiki on Houston might be fun. It’s quick and easy and has some interesting pieces that make it unique.

  • Shiki on Houston is my go to EVERYTIME I'm in NYC at 100$ before tax

  • replying to u/Zazz2403: They are absolutely nothing like a tasting menu lol. I don't know what you even mean by that. They are normally 10-12 peice of nigiri with maybe a hand roll and maybe an appetizer. And there is absolutely differences in quality and experience at low price points.

They are essentially commodifying omakase for an audience that doesn't know what Omakase is.
