replying to u/myotheraccount2023: The original Papaya King opened in the 30s on the UES and sold tropical fruit juices. Then it expanded into hot dogs and was successful at it, so the name became associated with hot dogs and soon enough, everyone copied it.

replying to u/lil_poopster: You're in luck, I just wrote an eating itinerary for my sister who is coming in to NYC this weekend. I have notes. Day 1 — really do try to make a reservation at Golden/Thai Diner if you can — they get busy! Not sure about Potluck Club. Day 2 — no notes! Day 3 — skip Gray's Papaya, imo. There are better places to get hot dogs. If you want something special that feels New York-y, maybe try La Dinistia, a Chino-Latino place a couple blocks south. Day 4 — SKIP BLACK SEED!!! as others have said, Tompkins Square is far superior. Apollo Bagels also just opened up near there and is getting major press. Scarrs is great but be prepared to wait. Days 5, 6, and 7 look great. My general impression is that this is beautifully planned, but IMHO you need to make sure you get some empanadas, some quesabirria, and a burrito. Personally I am fond of the California burrito from Dorado on 12th, or anything from Electric Burrito.

Skip it For Shake Shack, go to the original location in Madison Square Park for the full experience There are also some mini-chains that are worth checking out.
