That being said Decibel us super trendy, over crowded and majority of the people going have no real appreciation for Japanese cuisine or sake. The whole experience is just bad and there are other places to go if your really interested in enjoying sake.

replying to u/acecoffeeco: So glad decibel is still there. Used to be my go to spot to bring people from out of town in the late 90s. You could still smoke indoors and it had blade runner vibes. Had to ring to get in. Haven’t been there in a long time, maybe a revisit is in order. They used to have a jellyfish app on the menu that I still haven’t ever seen anywhere else.

Wait staff at Decibel is crazy rude - it’s like they try to be the exact opposite of how Japanese handle customer service. Awesome bar, however. (Kenka is awesome too tho. Have been thrown out from there years ago. Made friends with waitress who did and always treated me well after.)

replying to u/4d39faaf-80c4-43b5: I like Sakagura, you walk through a lobby and downstairs, it reminds me of Izykayas in Tokyo. Great selection of Sake and a proper Japanese menu going well beyond sushi. It's adjacent to Soba Totto (excellent barachirachi at lunchtime btw) and across the street from Yasuda. Sake bar Decibel is also fun, much more casual, food menu includes a few types of sashimi, akimo, gyu don, curry, takowasa.

I picked up a few bottles at Astor Wines yesterday.

replying to u/thansal: The sorta usual culprits might look like: * Hi-Collar or Bar Moga for yoshoku (Japanese Westerner food). Hi-Collar is a lovely coffee shop during the day, and Bar Moga's cocktail service is wonderful. Moga is one of the few places that does the [Tampopo style omurice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVgKccixIhQ). * Sake Bar Decibel - divy bar w/ snacks * Katsu-Hama - great katsu and good curry * Sunrise Mart and Katagiri for ready to eat lunches. Both are nice Japanese grocery stores that do pre-made lunch things. I've heard good things about Sunrise's sandwiches, and I love the gyudon from Katagiri. Katagiri is also one of the better options for rice balls. * Okiboru house of tsukemen - people say they like it better than TabeTomo, but I haven't been yet. * Kenka - been around forever. * Flippers, Taiyaki NYC or Eggcellent soufflés pancake for souffle pancakes (the giant fluffy things, Hi-Collar doesn't serve them, they just have tall pancakes). Not my favorite thing, but worth trying once. Yakitori was covered elsewhere.
