replying to u/Zazz2403: 7th Street is so mid now. Patties have no crust which is the defining thing that makes smash burgers great. They are just drowning in grease. Agree with all your other recs. Plus Definitely hamburger America for smash, or Gotham social. Sleeper: bk Jani.

Some of them are tourist-trappy, but all of them have good food and good atmosphere and are places I'd take a first-time visitor: * Pizza by the Slice -- Joe's (Greenwich Village) or Scarr's (Lower East Side) * Pizza by the Pie -- John's of Bleecker Street (West Village) or Rubirosa (Little Italy) * Deli - Katz's (Lower East Side) or S&P (Flatiron) * Bagels - Tompkins Square (East Village) or Pop-Up (Greenwich Village) or Brooklyn Bagels & Coffee (Greenwich Village) * Halal Food - the trendy Halal cart right now is Adel's in Midtown, which has some insane lines. Skip that one and go to Mido's (in Chelsea, conveniently) which is just as good, but less hyped and less crowded. * Burgers - Corner Bistro (West Village). People will argue that it's not the best burger in the city, and hasn't been for some time, but it's still a very good burger, and the dive-bar vibes are immaculate. * Chinatown - Uncle Lou's or Wo Hop, for sitdown meals; Fried Dumpling, Shu Jiao Fu Zhou, Golden Steamer or Mei Lei Wah for snacks * Diner Breakfast - Waverly Restaurant or La Bonbonniere (both West Village) Enjoy your visit!

replying to u/ChivalrousWombat: Desi Galli’s Desi Poutine. Tikka masala sauce smothered fries with grated paneer on top. Not a traditional or plain fries, but if you’re into poutine/fries with a sauce on top… They do a masala fries as well for something a little simpler, and they’re solid. Salt + Charcoal served me some great fries that were very simple but I loved the execution. After coming out the fryer and salting the fries, they also tossed in a variety of herbs and it was really nice. 886 - I’m a sucker for Eric Sze and anything mala, and the fries here last I went had a great. They were served well seasoned and with a healthy dollop of mayo on top and I’ve learned that it’s not everyone’s thing, but I love them.
