People come for the room, not the food. It's big and dramatic and works for groups, birthdays and dates, and everything on the menu is shareable. The food splits people. Some say the and egg rolls and the are genuinely good, but plenty call it an Instagram trap where portions shrank and prices went up.

Tabetomo, birrialandia, and los tacos are the epitome of genuine food gone corporate. Not to mention the mussels in white wine at St Tropez is one of the most highly posted dishes online

An IG trap is a restaurant that focuses more on decor than the food. Fushimi and Buddakan are examples.

Buddakan dumplings with oyster sauce are actually delicious.

Try to go back with a group to do the chef’s tasting menu. One of my favorite dining experiences to this day and I have eaten my way halfway around the planet.

They said everything was good and they were very impressed with how accommodating they were with allergies.

Buddakan is extremely reliably good, IMO. One of my favorite dishes in the entire world is their crab fried sticky rice.

Only additional suggestions I would offer for downtown would be Buddakan or STK Downtown but those might be more high end than you are looking for. If it were me, I would take them to Balthazar where they could get burgers and fries then afterwards go to Black Tap for dessert. That would make for a pretty impressive day.

    Buddakan’s ambiance is 👌!

  • replying to u/ECPlayTime: Buddakan makes some amazing lobster and shrimp egg rolls. Traditional egg rolls can be found in most chinese restaurants and there are some great places on Mott St. I'd recommend Wo Hop City.

    The Buddakan ones are great.
