Oneg Bakery

9.1/10

Get the . It's dense, mostly chocolate rather than bready, and a lot of people call it the best in the city. The is the one they name, though some regulars say order the kokosh instead. It's very expensive, and a few people find the chocolate cheap-tasting and the whole thing too heavy.

The Oneg one is a lot richer and sweeter because there is a lot higher ratio of chocolate to challah, and I think there's added granulated sugar in the chocolate or layered with it.

I found Oneg to be less bready and more chocolately. It was dense and rich and more fudgey

I tried the double chocolate one and it was ... OK? The consistency was bad -- very chewy like a low-quality marshmallow candy or dondurma. And it uses canola oil instead of butter which made it greasier and less flavorful. Was not a fan.

  • I actually had a terrible experience at Oneg. Made me sad because a few close friends really love it as a classic from an old old bakery. I just didn't like the chocolate they use, it didn't taste nice and it was dense like a brick. Every bite made me want less.

  • Dare I say I think it’s better than Breads. Highly recommend Oneg if you’re in the area or want to leave the touristy dumbo/williamsburg area.

well... you convinced me to go try Onegs. and quite frankly I'm unimpressed. the size and weight (and hefty price) are impressive, but the flavor is cheap chocolate and sugar.
