“Very under seasoned fried chicken where you can clearly see which parts had seasoning and which were bare; it's as if someone spilled seasoning over sections of the chicken but they didn't bother smoothing it out for even distribution. Ribs were TOUGH and chewy and straight up plain; they try to mask it by dumpling BBQ sauce over it.”

replying to u/xlaurenthead: Yeah Melba’s or Amy Ruth’s in Harlem have a very oroud and longstanding food tradition. Harlem is the birthplace of chicken and waffles which is now ubiquitous in the South. These are very authentic and have roots in the South as the South has roots in them

replying to u/mew5175_TheSecond: Sylvia's in Harlem I think fits the bill. There's probably some places listed here with chicken that is better, but Sylvia's in general does have really really really delicious chicken and it's just a great place overall for a birthday dinner IMO. And their cornbread is to die for. (Some people criticize their cornbread for being too sweet and tasting like cake… so if you are a cornbread traditionalist, maybe you won't like it… but what people criticize is also why others claim it is the best cornbread in the city). But we're talking about chicken here and Sylvia's knows chicken.
