  • Of the various Isaan style places, it's my top. I think it goes a bit harder on the heat and funk than Hug Esan does, and I like the broader menu vs Zaab Zaab's fairly compact one. They do a great moo grob, and the 'curried rice croquetes with preserved sausages' is one of my "I could eat this every day for the rest of my life".

  • replying to u/dantesinfernoracket1: Yes. And the menu is way more elevated than the other places in the area. Some deep-cut dishes that aren't found as commonly in the States. I haven't tried all of them, but on that alone, I'd rank it pretty high.

my death row dish of Naem Kow Tod (salad of deep fried rice that goes super big on every flavor, my place for it is Hug Esan or Playground in Elmhurst).

  • replying to u/elitejun: you had me at Thai. Mad for chicken looks amazing too might head up there tomorrow, but Thai is definitely on the menu now tonight!!! I can't believe I haven't checked playground out before didn't even realize it was right here. Looks soooo good & i love spicy. Thank you!!! What do you like getting from Koliba?? Gonna stop by for a late lunch on wednesday for a brew and some food.

Playground is a good place for: * Curried Rice Croquets w/ preserved meat (aka nam khao tod, my death row dish) * Fried pork jerky, served w/ hotsaice, perfect "good w/ beer" food along w/ some sticky rice. * Anything with their crispy pork belly (moo grob), I generally just get pad kra pao.

  • I'll be surprised if any place out does playground (when you tell them you want it hot they go "no you don't", and they're right).

  • replying to u/justflipping: Ask for Thai spicy at Playground and Hug Esan. Spicy guru-level at Abiko Curry. More recs: [Best Spicy Meals in NYC?](https://reddit.com/r/FoodNYC/comments/1lfm9dc/best_spicy_meals_in_nyc/)

Totally agree with this. Anything “Thai spicy” at these two places will hurt. Badly. My husband keeps doing though and loves it!

  • Playground is my default (biggest menu, and they also do Yum Khao Tod and banging crispy pork belly).

  • replying to u/lalochezia1: yeah basically go to an actual thai restaraunt in elmhurst like hug esan or khao kang or any of half of a dozen on that block, go with a thai friend. and ask for thai spicy. REAL thai spicy. then when the waiter looks at you with a sad face that says "stupid westerner, there there", have your thai friend say "no, they mean it!" bonus: elmhurst hospital is within crawling distance

Both also serve my deathrow dish of Nam Khao Tod (or curried rice croquet salad at Playground), it's my ideal of a perfectly balanced dish with every flavor profile showing up.

  • Playground in Jackson Heights, and Khao Kang and Hug Esan in Elmhurst are excellent and truly authentic Thai places that can give you real Thai-level spiciness.

  • replying to u/IchabodChris: zaab zaab and hug esan both in elmhurst are VERY good and remind me a lot of the food i ate when i was living in Thailand

The 3rd (and generally my favorite) is Playground. A wider menu than Zaab Zaab, and goes harder on the funk than Hug Esan.

  • replying to u/justflipping: Go to Queens, specifically Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside for authentic Thai food! - Playground - Saranrom - Zaab Zaab - Khao Nom and Khao Kang - Pata Paplean - Hug Esan - Jai Sang Ma [Updated Recommendations for the best Thai food in NYC!](https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodNYC/comments/1f6nk1w/updated_recommendations_for_the_best_thai_food_in/) [Elmhurst/Woodside Thai](https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodNYC/comments/1aqcoca/elmhurstwoodside_thai/)

Playground is incredible and very very spicy

  • Go to Playground Thai in Queens and get the Som Tum, ask for Thai spicy.

  • Feel like they really cater to Thai tastes (so spicy) but really like that spot

  • replying to u/justflipping: - Ayada - Playground - Bangkok Degree - Chao Thai - Hug Esan

Playground makes one of the funkiest I've ever come across, and it's one of the places with less common ingredients (marinated raw crab, salted egg)

  • replying to u/Cheezfri: Yes!! I'm in love with Jackson Heights. Please OP, I'm begging you to take this advice. Check out this previous thread about Jackson Heights. But if there is one place in Jackson Heights, I LOOOOOOOVE the most is Momo Crave. The momos are so good, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. A must try! https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodNYC/comments/12v9f4s/comment/jhad5ge/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

Playground - A small bar w/ excellent Isaan style food that doesn't shy from heat or funk

  • replying to u/thansal: My question on this is: does anyone know somewhere that actually makes it with kra pao? I assume I've only ever had it with normal basil. As for 'best', no clue, but Playground in elmhurst makes a good one, and they'll fuck you up with spice if you ask them. I'll admit, half my love is for their moo grob, so I don't really care what dish I get with that.

Playground for spiciest of spicy boys

  • replying to u/SirLudicrus: Kua Kling is available everyday at Playground in Elmhurst/Woodside.

I love the kua kling at Playground.

  • replying to u/thansal: As everyone said, you went all out. How did you get out to Bayside? Bus/taxi or did you have a car? For Playground: don't sleep on their crispy pork, I honestly think it's one of the best around. We tend to get a pad kra pao w/ moo grob, the 'curried rice croquets' (Nam Khao Tod, this is my death row dish, though I think Hug Esan does it a little better) and the fried pork jerky (perfect 'good w/ beer' food). Momo Crave: My favorite momos, but I honestly tend to not like momos (just a style/taste thing). We've always described indo-chinese Chilli flavor as 'like Gen. Tso's but way better', and theirs is super addicting. That said, I think the sukuti and sandeko are even more unique (and spicy), 100% worth trying those next time. Also, their veg filling is my favorite for whatever reason.

I actually did get the crispy pork at Playground too and it was great!!

  • Playground, get their pad kra pow or kra pow moo grob with either a Thai lemon tea or Thai iced tea and thank me later!

  • The pad kra pao at maximum spiciness with a Thai lemon tea from Playground - best Thai meal I've ever had, period.
