replying to u/bruiserbrody45: This is a great response, i would just add that depending on your tastes, my St Marks move is the Bao while waiting for Szechuan Mountain House. Same owners as Che Li but sichuan. Also, three times is a mini chain that has very good soup dumplings with no fuss in many locations.

Momofuku we did before. pp probably $150-$200 limit. doesn't have to be a set menu but open to course menus. no dietary restrictions, and not upscale fine dining as we want a very jovial vibe. I am eyeing up SEA by Jungsik and just sharing a bunch of plates, to give you an idea.

replying to u/pavelysnotekapret: There's a certain taste profile at Mountain House, and sadly only sparingly in a few restaurants in NYC, that is reminiscent in a way restaurants taste like in China that I haven't quite been able to put my finger on. I think that je ne said quoi is probably the difference between Mountain House and other Chinese restaurants here. I've noticed this primarily in Sichuan/Hunan restaurants, so it may be due to limited sourcing of chefs from China skilled in the cuisines relative to Fujianese or Cantonese trained chefs (in a more extremal case I haven't seen a good classical Beijing restaurant at all in the city, despite the volume of high quality Beijingese chefs/restaurants in China)
