replying to u/burnshimself: Four Horsemen and Torisi are fantastic but very tough reservations. 4 Charles is impossible res and highly overrated - Monkey Bar and Au Cheval are the same restaurant group and serve the same burger but much easier to get into, and Monkey Bar even has a comparable cool vibe. Sugarfish is a pass for me. They’re a chain, they’re all over and it’s not remotely good enough to merit a stop while you’re in NYC for a limited time. Carbone is 100% about the vibe / sceney / tik tok famous. Food is nothing to write home about and it’s outrageously expensive. Much better Italian in the city. Would recommend neighborhood spots like Osteria del Bianco or La Rina, or better run upscale spots like Casa Lever or il Mulino. La Rina is the gem of this list, not a place people often visit and my favorite pasta in New York. Takes a bit of effort to get out there to Brooklyn but 100% worth it. Barbuto has fallen off a bit, food can still be good but do not find yourself there past 8:30 on a Friday or Saturday - they blare heavy metal rock after that time because owner Joe Bastianich forces them to despite it completely disrupting the atmosphere of the restaurant. Minetta Tavern is hyped but worth it. Their burger is very unique, something you won’t experience anywhere else. Great atmosphere too. Balthazar - see Carbone commentary. Skip for me.
