Sushi ShoCHAIN

9.7/10

AI-generated summary

The base runs fast and the pieces are small, so regulars say the okonomi add-ons are the real point. They start around $35 a piece and can easily double your bill. The sake pairing is the bargain of the meal. There is also a $50 for takeout, though people say it's less consistent than the counter.

  • My photos don't do it justice and I couldn't say what kinds of fish were in it, but oh my god was it one of the best things I've ever eaten.

  • Personally, I saw the appeal towards Sushi Sho is with the fact that it is on par with Tabelog Gold level Sushiyas in Japan

  • The okonomi is where you can find all sorts of interesting pieces that you don’t typically see at other sushiya in NYC, either. I ended up spending an extra ~300 per person on top of the base price, but it was well worth it, among the best sushi experiences of my life.

  • Sushi Sho NYC is the most impressive sushi restaurant in NYC and it's not even close.

  • the breadth of things you can get at sho is really unparalleled. It remains the only sushi-ya I've been to in Japan or the States where rice varied mid-meal (different seasoning).

  • The main menu is good not amazing, the extra prices are better but not earth shattering, the real plus here is space and service which to be fair no one else can compete with, but if you were blindfolded the food is just slightly under the others.

  • replying to u/sappidus: Interesting you should say that, as I think their takeout chirashi is **spectacular**, lol. It's essentially exactly the marinated/aged taste that I am looking for out of a chirashi, and something I have not had in NYC ever since Sushi-Ann stopped doing theirs. (Though Noz Market's also has some similar elements.) My one omakase at Sho was also incredible, and I look forward to having the experience again someday.

The first time I had their chirashi it blew my mind and was probably my favorite ever. Had it again two weeks ago and it wasn’t nearly as fresh, and the shari was less vinegary and more inconsistent.

  • But damn—was it worth it. It wasn’t even a meal, it was more an extended gastronomic lesson on the finer points of edomae sushi delivered by one of the world’s foremost experts, Chef Nakazawa. I will never forget it and it set a nearly impossible standard for every other meal I will have in my life.

  • replying to u/Fragrant-Ad5173: If only one, Noz or Shion? What was it about Sushi Sho that made it not the choice? That's the newest one and seems the hardest to get a reservation for now.

Sho is just annoying - the omakase part is rapid and you are starving after. The okonomi are $35 a piece and you would need like 10+ to be full.

  • Sushi Sho without a doubt. I’ve been to many sushi restaurants in my life but this one is something extraordinary. So many memorable dishes: ankimo with watermelon pickle, fermented sea urchin and salmon, hair crab with egg yolk and it goes on and on
