Aska

  • This is my second time at Aska and it was better than the first. The scallop dish, lobster + foam, and the last 2 meat courses were completely new and the sauces were perfect. This tasting menu is very straight forward, fish / meat + sauce but they execute it so well.

Maybe I went on a bad night, but I was SO let down by Aska. Service was rushed, vibe was all off, and I left way too hungry for such an expensive meal.

  • Aska was my first Michelin star experience and it vastly exceeded my expectations. Not to spoil, but I wish I could forget the first bite of one of their seafood courses just to experience it again. Life-changing and an inflection point for me in terms of fine dining.

  • replying to u/PhilosophicalPhool: Thank you and everyone else in this thread for your suggestions, we've gone ahead and booked a table at Aska!

we found the food very underwhelming. They seemed more interested in show and novelty than actual flavor and taste. We literally went out and got a second dinner after Aska because we were so dissatisfied.

  • replying to u/SwansEnthusiast: What made you love Atera but hate Aska?? Also when did you try each? Ty!!

The pacing was interminable, we waited at least 30 mins between dishes. The food while visually beautiful always seemed to be more about them showing off technique instead of whether it was enjoyable to eat. The beef was plated over pine tips which stuck all over the meat so you had to keep picking them off, and the emulsified oyster dish was one of the worst dishes I’ve had anywhere.

  • Absolutely spectacular! Every bite was incredible! Very flavorful, different textures and temperatures, very high-quality ingredients, and very tasty! One of the best servings of starting bites to a meal I’ve ever had!

  • The menu will be MANY courses of rather small portions, but it’s incredibly inventive and - at least to my experience - much closer to to something you’d find in Copenhagen.

Seconding Aska. The service was incredible and I dream of their langoustine

Loved Aska! Despite what this sub usually thinks about going to places during holidays, I went for this past NYE and it was incredible. The kitchen also came up to our table directly and one by one cheered us to the New Year. It was a beautiful experience with really down to earth people working there.

Aska is the answer. The tables are kinda far apart and it’s dark and intimate feeling. And the food is literally incredible

  • replying to u/WoofDen: These two + Aska are the Holy Trinity for me

Aska is a bit more challenging for me — I’m sensitive to salt and find their food a touch too salty. But I think these three restaurants consistently put out the most interesting menus.

  • replying to u/Smenderhoff: Aska!!! I could tell just looking at the pic. They love their tiny saucepans over there for sure. This is certainly a departure from the normal “X hours in nyc” posts with chopped cheese and bagels. I don’t think cheap or expensive is necessarily the way to go but you def missed out by not trying some of the more accessible fare

Aska is so good. That sauce is one of the best things i've ever tasted.

  • Also my favorite restaurant in the city. I’ve definitely not tried all the heavy hitters but out of Le Bernadin, Jungsik, Sushi Noz and many other one star restaurants, it’s the only one I’ve returned to multiple times.

  • replying to u/heywhatsuphello29: Aska is amazing and the restaurant vibes are really intimate and dark. Joo ok has awesome views. Saga has amazing views and feels lush.

I'm a fan of both Aska and Joo ok (haven't made it to Saga yet). Just throwing out that the pics on Google don't really do Aska justice, especially if you go for dinner. It felt much more striking actually being in the space compared to what I had seen online.

  • replying to u/Horatiotheduck: Very good choices, we have similar taste. How was Aska??

Incredible. I’ve been lucky to go twice and each time blew my mind with the creativity and delicateness in the courses. Probably some of the best dishes I’ve had in my life.

  • replying to u/Agreeable-Ad-7110: Wow, this is a surprise to me. Aska is like one of my absolute favorites, I’ve been 4 times now. But I always think of it as very much not filling. Last time, I walked back home (which is 4.5 miles fwiw) and then immediately had a couple bowls of cereal.

While I enjoyed Aska, I felt that their portions/servings were the least out of all the 3 and 2 Michelin star restaurants in NYC.

  • Food, wine, and service were all phenomenal at Aska. I did leave a little hungry. But would go again.

  • Was so good! Went on Saturday. Loved the flavors and the wine pairing.

  • dinner at Aska - incredible, flavorful and highly consistent new Nordic cuisine. Best meal I’ve had in the city.

Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Unfortunately I left hungry too. That said, I’d still go back.

  • replying to u/MrCakemeat: I’ve long believed one of the reasons Le Bernardin is so divisive on this sub is a difference of perspective on what high end fish/seafood is *supposed* to be like. If you want the sauce to be the star, you’re more likely to love Le Bernardin. If you want the fish to be the star, you’re more likely to feel it’s not worth it.

The seafood at Aquavit and Aska were much tastier than at Le Bernardin, with better seafood AND sauce.

  • Loved loved loved Aska. Sorry, never been to Aquavit. But Aska was super fun and the wine paring worked perfectly. The. Non- alcoholic pairing was actually more creative and interesting.

  • But I have been to aska many times and have always been impressed, I dont get others here saying it’s more “interesting” than “tasty”. It’s damn delicious

  • I really can't recommend Aska enough. It has a beautiful outdoor area and the food is impeccable. I've done a lot of the fine dining in the city (Per Se, JG, EMP (pre-vegan), etc) and it is my favorite at the moment.

  • Aska they are honestly borderline racist and terrible customer service I would highly not recommend.

  • replying to u/throwaway77914: Can you elaborate more on the borderline racist part?

Never have I been to something so UNaccommodating, so snooty, and so deliberately in your face arrogant.
