Daniel

4.7/10French

AI-generated summary

People rave about the service and the room. Several call it the best service they have had in New York. The food is the argument. A few had one of the best meals of their lives, but more say it's fine and forgettable for the price and that the place has slipped since it lost its third star. The madeleine and the canele they send you home with get named a lot.

  • I’ve had canard à la presse at many top restaurants before, and this was definitely the worst.

  • replying to u/kennedy_notrelated: I’m starting to feel that way. How does it maintain the stars if it’s no bueno?

But like I said the food was lacking.

  • replying to u/ab216: Daniel was terrific. My wife was pregnant with twins and they sent us home with 2 bibs.

The service at Daniel is extraordinary. They prepared us a special tasting menu with extra dishes and didn't charge, plus sent us home with a written record of everything we ate and the wine we drank. At various points virtually everyone from the kitchen and floor staff came out to greet us. Everything was exemplary.

  • But the food was beyond reproach - among the top three meals in my life.

  • Which...were squashed with uninspired dishes, some menu offering downright ordinary. Cheese plate..had ones that were awful. They traded with 2 that were fine. Husbands real desert wasnt very good either. I told him at the end..it was more like a 1* meal not 2*.

  • replying to u/une-petite-dame: I actually went to Daniel this year in Feb and had a fab time- I’d never been before but there were some really fun and delicious dishes on the tasting menu. Plus the dining room is gorgeous. Was pleasantly surprised to see it on the list tbh

Daniel has the best service, both hospitable and clockwork like in precision, I've had in New York. And there was a great dish on the tasting menu both times I tried, and the rest of the dishes were good, with interesting touches.

  • Food @ Daniel was just ok, nothing really STOOD out other than the veloute and the service.
