  • This was smooth, a bit frothy, and super comforting with a rich cardamom smell that fills the nose, with a perfect sweetness. A very pure embodiment of a warm hug.

  • The cardamom bun, to be fair, was really soft and moist, and I loved the warming crunchy spice from the cardamom sugar laced throughout, but it just felt a bit muted and was honestly cold even right after they handed it to me.

I wish they went the whole way and cinnamon-rolled it with solid layers of brown sugar, butter, and much more spice. I dunked it in the cardamom latte which was super awesome; that bite was top tier, but the thing has to stand on its own to be great. Cardamom latte was smooth, a bit frothy, and super comforting with the cardamom smell filling the nose, and it wasn’t too sweet. A very pure embodiment of a warm hug. Matcha latte was too milky and the matcha wasn’t especially flavorsome. The sweetness level was good though. I thought some other items in the baker’s case looked really great but reviews all mentioned the cardamom bun. I’d like to try some other stuff to see, as I think this place has a lot of potential.

IMO the cardamon bun from La Cabra is really meh and overhyped by the reviews. I really loved their croissant and it was super buttery and flakey and it was the star of the show for me.

  • replying to u/Parsvottanasana: Dominique Ansel sells them in boxes of 3. They are ok, kinda small. Eclair bakery has them but I don't remember loving them. I got one at Frisson Espresso once and it was soggy on the outside (🚩) and they asked if I wanted to heat it up(????) La Cabra and Le Fournil have good ones. On my list of NYC canele I also have Black Star Bakery, Patisserie Vanessa, and Frenchette Bakery but I haven't been to any of those ones yet. I hope to hear some recs too!!!! I fucking love caneles

La Cabra has really good ones - crunchy outside, wet and custardy inside. The only thing I don't like is the overpowering rum flavor.

  • The croissants however were excellent, particularly the ham and cheese croissant. The sweetness of the ham against the salty cheese was perfection.

  • replying to u/dem_gainzz: The coffee influence here feels like it’s from Italy. Charcoal roast, no true coffee flavor. Most places serve gas station tier coffee. Spend a few days in SF and you will know the difference. Lighter roasts and carefully crafted pour overs. The only exception in nyc is la cabra.

La Cabra is the only place with good coffee in the entire city? Nah.

  • replying to u/hilariouspj: La Cabra, Don't Feed the Alligators, and Everyman Espresso on a different tier than the others named here

La Cabra pastries too. So good.

  • replying to u/GeneValgene: I know I'm going to get flamed for this....but La Cabra is my fave

La Cabra’s plain croissant is actually the best one in the city.

  • replying to u/Sad_Hungry: Yeah I’ve been a few times .. pastries out shine the coffee

They’re probably the best coffee in the city. They constantly rotate what beans they’re using so maybe you just got one that wasn’t to your taste

  • La Cabra is best for me. Theirs is the only one that truly tastes like they use high quality butter and is flavorful

  • replying to u/haribobosses: I’m doing a tour of plain croissants. I’ll go back for the specials at some point.

La Cabra has a really flakey croissant. Most people recommend their cardamon bun but personally I think their Croissant are way better.

  • I would say La Cabra is a can't miss for coffee, bread and pastries.

  • I did really enjoy and like the La Cabra's beans but IDK if it's worth 3x the price of Partner's.

  • The only three shops in east village that I think are worth it for  someone who actively explores third wave coffee in different cities (single origin focused specialty coffee) is la cabra and maybe hi collar (Japanese restaurant that operates as kissaten).

La Cabra is my favorite too. Fuck the cardamon bun, their croissant is where it's at.

  • replying to u/No_Housing9113: Okay, thank you. It's been some time since we visited Black Seed, so perhaps we would just end up being disappointed going there again. Do you have some recommendations for other bagel places that have breakfast bagels? 😊

    great coffee and pastries.

  • replying to u/meatkevin: if La Cabra is the best then there's no good croissant in NYC lol. A generic chain I went to in Paris had better croissants.

its better than most croissant I've had living 20 years in Paris

  • replying to u/kingcarlo: I’d get cardamom buns at Smor over La Cabra. I haven’t had the chance to get to Torrisi but I wasn’t wowed by Gramercy Tavern. You’re not gonna be able to walk into Cote on a Friday night. Highly recommend getting a res somewhere instead, many places do late night reservations. If you want cookies, Funny Face bakery or Elsewhere Espresso. Also noticed you didn’t mention any cocktail bars, but there are many around where you’ll be going.

The cardamom buns at La Cabra don't live up to the ones at Juno, sadly.

  • replying to u/singalongwithme: It’s basic…but I’d vote for la cabra and sey. I dislike the lines (I’m obviously a part of that) at la cabra but I can’t pass it up when I’m near (or not as near even).

Their upscale bakery/coffee combo is kindof unmatched. Because usually if the coffee is that good the baked goods fall off or vice versa.
