replying to u/KintsugiTurtle: I’ve wanted to check out Dirt Candy for a while, but places with single tasting menus are hard for us. It seems like from their website they might be able to accommodate vegan and soy-free though if we contact them in advance. I’ve heard good things about Buddha Bodai but it looks like their menu is a lot of fake (soy based) meats. :(

replying to u/thansal: Oh! How was the caviar? I've still not picked any of it up and I've been really curious. The fact that they have it speaks highly for it. The beets look lovely, but the sweet potato would probably be my stand out. I wonder if I can come up with a good excuse to go (And get a res...). They really are a fantastic place, and I'm so glad they finally have a star.
“caviar was great! had it at musket room last week as well - i liked dirt candy’s use of it better imo. honestly after all the courses, i was stuffed by the time i got to the sweet potato but it was definitely really good. the other standouts were the celeriac and the brussels sprouts but the whole meal was super fresh and delicious.”

replying to u/Laridianresistance: Okay, I went to Dirt Candy and I can't put it in the same category as 63 or Foxface. I went last month and it was kind of disappointing. I knew what I was getting into, obviously, but I really didn't have a good experience with the food. A lot of it was missing something crucial - at times something as basic as salt or balance, like the dessert onion cheesecake wasn't really pleasant. The tasting started great but went off the rails in a disappointing way. I ended up doing the dreaded post-dinner pizza slice (although it was a good reason to grab a mushroom slice from scarr's, so that was something). 63 Clinton is reliable and a good time. People like to talk about it here but it's an accessible, inexpensive (comparatively) tasting that most people enjoy. But Foxface is the play. Amazing menu with amazing wine list. The space is a little cramped but it's still a good experience and you should go ahead and try all the interesting, seasonal stuff you find on the menu.
