“The burger was great, but not nearly as memorable. The sandwich was a bit dry. Wedge salad wasn't even a wedge, and my dad had the pleasure of getting a giant hair in it. The desserts were fantastic, though.”

“The bacon is thick cut and great, but it’s like an extra patty so I’d rather just have the beef personally. Egg is personal preference - wouldn’t say it’s a must, but bacon + egg makes for the best pic”

“Au Cheval’s burger was voted best in the US.”
H3
“The Au Cheval burger is a pretty good burger. The patty, while high quality and well cooked is over seasoned. The bacon tends to overpower everything (and has too much pepper on it) on top of that. It's greasier than it should be, and just tastes like there is too much going on.”

“This burger was fine but the epitome of instagram food. Got it a couple months ago before a movie at the Roxy and it was wayyyy to buttery and rich that all the flavors kind of blended in an overpowering goopy way.”
H3
“Burger: incredible Egg: why? Runny yolk on anything is delicious. But god, the rubbery, flavorless fried egg white is just a terrible edition to any food especially a burger this good. I think cheeseburger no additions is the move. Fries are good, but not the perfection of skin-on fries OP is looking for.”

“Au Cheval (the one in Chicago) is probably still the best burger I’ve ever had. It was a wonderful symphony of sumptuous textures and (exactly the right amount of) pleasing fat.”

“I was at Au Cheval last night for the first time and the burger wasn’t even close to being worth $36. It was quite lame. Two, thin patties with a fat bun. Average tasting at best. Lame, lame, lame.”
H3
“The burger was so good and filling that I had absolutely no qualms with the $35 price tag, however $14 for a medium side of fries with some basic garlic aioli was ridiculous to me, but i didn’t want to just eat the burger alone. Fries were delicious tho”
H3
“That bacon is thick, and it doesn't slide out of the burger with your bite. Egg is always perfect consistency.”
H3
“Worst burger & fries I’ve ever had in the city and also the most expensive one. Completely flavorless except for the thick cut bacon, and the “beef tallow” fries had less flavor than deli fries.”

“For burgers, I think it is very hard to beat AI Cheval. I know it's a Chicago transplant. And they stopped getting their buns from Chicago, so it's not quite as good. But I've been to Au Cheval and Hamburger America at least 3 times a piece in the past year, and I think Au Cheval is better”

“Au Cheval checks all the boxes for me. Great seasoned burger, it’s a double burger so it’s BIG burger, the dijonnaise complements it really well, the cheddar is perfect, and yes as long as you’re going for it you should get the extras: a nice over-easy egg that puts it over the top (even if just for looks), and sweet peppery thick cut bacon that is just extraordinary. That is a damn good burger, my friends. It satisfies.”
H3
“With two fatty patties, cheese, and bacon, the egg doesn't add very much, and maybe detracts. The pickles and dijonnaise aren't strong or sharp enough to cut through it all---maybe if you ordered extra, but as is, they struggle to come forward.”

“Sleeper dish is the steak tartare. One of the best I've ever had.”

“Bone marrow was pretty good. The fried Bologna was meh. The burger looked amazing upon presentation with the egg & bacon, but the flavor was just ok.”

“I think au cheval would be a good bet for you based on what you laid out (I have similar burger tastes as you). I generally prefer crispy bacon like you but I really like the bacon there. It is thick and kind of chewy but the flavor is great. Also the fries there are amazing.”
H3
“I went to Au Cheval based on these and I wasn't impressed... Big bun with a not very well cooked smashed patties made me kinda sad - but the fries were good.”
H3
“Wings are good, comes with thighs as well, kind if a sticky sweet spicy sauce. Bacon Mac and cheese only thing I’d come back for. Prime rib sandwich a glorified cheesesteak with a curios gravy dip. Not au jus. Not worth $40.”
H3
“Even so, fantastic burger - bacon so good and melty and crispy. Criticism would be too much bread, maybe the egg would've helped. 8.5/10”
H3
“I liked the Au Cheval burger a little more than you, but I agree it’s better without the egg.”
H3
“the beef had almost no flavor. The bacon strips were really good. the patty tasted almost like it had been boiled.”

“7 - Au Cheval - I went for the French dip and ended up getting branzino bc I was having two dinners that day and have zero regrets. I will go back for the dip next time though. They have a cute speakeasy style bar in the basement. (10/10)”

“I've had the Au Cheval burger (with egg and bacon) 3 times, and the 4 Charles burger (with egg and bacon) 2 times. I personally do not believe there's a tangible difference in the taste between the two.”
