  • Just went last night and it was super meh - I’ve been going about 1x per year since 2014 or so and this time just felt “off”. The prices were higher for less quality of food - my wife’s steak had a pronounced lack of salt and my Chicken Palliard was fucking TINY.

  • Keith McNally’s restaurants (Balthazar and Minetta Tavern) go out of their way to welcome solo diners by sending a very festive complimentary glass of champagne. They would also fall within your budget, have great people watching, and an appropriately jolly atmosphere.

  • It was extremely tough and chewy and the knife they gave me wouldn't even cut through the meat. Awful experience.

  • replying to u/heywhatsuphello29: Steak frites from Balthazar is always fire 😅

Worked there for years, always thought it was serviceable but not “good”. It’s a rump that they cut grossly and hammer down to make it flat, not even a real steak cut. It’s only good because of the bearnaise and the Md butter, steak itself has no flavor.

  • It actually was pretty fantastic. Not the greatest steak I’ve ever had, but better than I expected and felt it was worth the money.

  • Balthazar is a fantastic restaurant. It’s beautiful, there’s so much going on, it’s a cornucopia of activity and a sensory overload.

  • I was just at balthazar with my gf and my dad and they undercooked my gf’s fish and the manager gave us a hard time when we complained about it.
