  • It’s a fucking iconic place and I love the history and the atmosphere and it’s probably my favorite burger on the face of the earth.

  • luger is consistently the best meat in the city-are the sides better at keens? yes. is the room prettier at hawksmoor? yes. on steak alone, luger can't be beat.

  • This burger was soooooooo…. mid. Advertising a burger with dry-aged meat means that at least someone somewhere in the establishment should be smelling something that smells somewhat like dry-aged meat. Absolutely nothing. All I got was an undersalted burger patty which was admittedly cooked very well, topped with cheese on raw onions and a bun of nothing noteworthy

  • replying to u/Dramatic_Tea_: For the uninformed people here, what's "Peter Luger's 'thing'"?

Sides that taste like microwaved citarella stuff and good steak. Clientele includes lots of tourists with kids in iPads. I’d never go back but it’s kind of worth going once.

    H3

  • Their tomato and onion dish is an embarrassment. They aren't even seasoned. The only place such a dish wouldn't be out of place is a "make your own burger" station at a BBQ.

    H3

  • I will take Peter Luger every day and twice on Sundays. Always cooked perfectly, the way it was ordered and consistent. Plus it’s significantly cheaper and the fries are better

  • replying to u/nightkhan: > Slicing tomatoes and onions and calling it a dish lmao. They don’t even season them. No salt and pepper. Just tomatoes and white onions. Gtfoh. you order their bacon along with it, cut the tomato and onions and mix it all together with the steak sauce

It was a joke. Unless you’re refilling the “make your own burger” table of a cookout, you don’t present someone a plate of unseasoned and uncooked tomatoes and white onions. Not with a straight face anyway. Certainly not for $15.

  • replying to u/Desperate_Hunter7947: RHT I agree with wholeheartedly. I had a straight up bad meal at Luger’s though and at that price point I don’t think I’ll ever go back.

The service there is as bad as any restaurant I've ever been to.

    H3

  • replying to u/RoosterClan2: To each their own. I highly disagree. The steak is fine. But there’s def better.

still, my best bites of steak have all come from that porterhouse.

    H3

  • I liked the food at a Peter Luger a lot. The ambiance was absolute trash with kids running around and people talking to grandma on FaceTime on speaker at full volume. But it was tasty.

    H3

  • I went to Peter Luger recently (I know people say its not all that, but I was curious to see for myself). Food was great, but all the tourists on their phones and toddlers screaming along their ipads' music gave such a cafeteria vibe

    H3

  • Avoid Peter Luger at all costs, despite its long history. They're a tourist trap meat factory where their mission is 100% quantity and pushing out as many overpriced steaks as possible, alongside under-seasoned sides and overpriced, watered-down drinks.

    H3

  • I do think it’s worth the trip simply because their cooking method is different from others. Have really good bacon slabs.

  • replying to u/Sea_Degree2910: Peter Luger vs. Benjamin Steakhouse? Who do you vote for?

Benjamin's infinitely better. Same exact steak (since they are ex luger's employees) with much better atmosphere, service, and convenience (reservations & credit card acceptance).

  • replying to u/Old-Scene2963: The porterhouse , fries and spinach is amazing. The crab and shrimp are always fresh. The lamb chops are the best in the city. People just wanna bitch out about anything. It's Reddit, most of these people used to be vegans !

I’ve actually been burned by the shrimp before. I always want some surf with my turf but I’ve gotten them multiple times and they taste very iodiney. That’s actually one of the traps on the menu

  • replying to u/pursuitofhappy: It’s not nasty but Peter Leugers used to be so coveted, cash only, had to know someone to get a table months in advance, but nowadays you can just walk in sit down pay with a card and steak is simply good rather than memorable.

Luger lost its status at least 15 years ago. First off, a ton of new steakhouses cropped up where you didn't have to deal with the ornery waiter schtick and served just as good good or better food. Last time I went to Luger the porterhouse for two was also one of the smallest porterhouses I've ever had.

  • replying to u/thighcandy: You didn't luck out on Luger's. It is still elite and I thank Pete Wells every time I go because ever since that review it has been trendy to hate it and it's now even less full of people pretending to be food bloggers than it was before. Porterhouse for 2 (rare). German potatoes. Bacon. Veggies. Strudel.

At 200+ bucks for a steak, it shouldn't come out overcooked because I didn't have the foresight to first order it undercooked. If you have to menu-hack the staple item of the establishment, something is wrong.

  • replying to u/bruiserbrody45: Cancelling Luger for Keens is a crime. Between the Pete Welles review and this subs general aversion to famous places, Luger is now extremely underrated on this sub.

The food is great. Not just the steak, but the sides and the dessert are pretty good.

  • replying to u/dhb113: Has it slipped over the past 8ish years? Yes. But it’s still a great restaurant and doesn’t deserve the amount of hate it gets. It become a weird fad to hate on Peter Lugers since that critic wrote a clearly click bait article. People now regurgitate this take to make themselves sound like sophisticated foodies. The steak for two is great. The burger is great (it’s legit the same burger from Red Hook Tavern). The prices are on par with any other premier steakhouse in the city.

Agree, steak for 2 was the best I’ve had in the city so far. Comes piping hot, was buttery tender, good presentation good sides.

  • replying to u/Lyin-Don: Peter Luger. The steak was good but not best ever. EVERYTHING else was poop. Slicing tomatoes and onions and calling it a dish lmao. They don’t even season them. No salt and pepper. Just tomatoes and white onions. Gtfoh. Also Carbone. The spicy rigs are def good but their veal parm, their $90 signature dish SUCKED. Not like “it sucked for $90” or “I expect better from Carbone”. I mean it was be disappointing if it was free. I’m hoping it was just an off night because it was an embarrassing excuse of veal parm.

I am still partial to Lugers. I can appreciate the criticism, but something about it still strikes right for me. A group of 6 of us have gone there every December for many years now and always have a great night.

  • replying to u/MurrayPloppins: Check out any of the 100+ prior times this question has been asked. People like Keen’s as a classic, Cote for something unusual (it’s Korean bbq, done with “steakhouse quality” meats). Luger used to be the go-to but has fallen off. If you feel like coming out to Brooklyn, I recommend St Anselm or Gage and Tollner depending on which neighborhood you find yourself in- both are solid.

But they've really turned things around since then. I've been twice. Incredible food, excellent service both times, I was stunned at how much my experience changed. I would go there any day.

    H3

  • replying to u/SalesforceStudent101: Is it an experience like some other old school nyc restaurants? Or not really? I’ve always imagined it’s to steakhouses what McSorley’s is to bats, but realized I have no real reason to think that

The fancier places might have a better variety of cuts and sides and fancier glassware and presentation, but I like the simplicity of Lugers. And I've never had a bad meal there.

    H3

  • replying to u/setforstun: Truth is Luger’s changed for the better after Pete Wells review torched them. They actually offer quality service now. Great experience

    Surprisingly, the steak was fantastic.

    H3

  • The food is horrible though. Unripe tomatoes, bacon is standard, steak is so woefully undersalted it's a chore to eat.

    H3

  • replying to u/Friedchicken747: Thank you! Saw somewhere that Peter Luger overdoes the crusty not sure if that’s a universal experience or they were having an off night? We’ve already booked Peter Luger but might be changing it either for Hawksmoor or Butcher & Banker, this requires deeper thought 😂

I like peter luger, they have a location in queens/long island that I go to all the time. The outside is def broiled so its kinda burnt sometimes but the meat inside is always juicy.

    H3

  • replying to u/ironicallyironichuh: Ooh Peter Luger would be perfect for them. Then take them by the water to see the skyline, if they are up for the walk 🏙️ thank you!

Warning, Luger's shtick is the waiters being rude and unpleasant and there isn't really anywhere to wait for a table where you're not being shoved around by other patrons or wait staff.

    H3

  • replying to u/GraveDiggerSedan: Always advocated for a Luger Buger w/ slab bacon and Holy Cow Sundae which is around $50. You get those garlic rolls, too! Great meal if you only want to eat once that day.

Everything is rich and decadent and delicious. Their signature steak sauce is so good I could drink it, even though the steak doesn’t need it.

    H3

  • replying to u/sansa2020: Would you say that Gramercy’s better than red hook tavern or luger’s? Coming to town soon!

I did not like Peter Lugers burger at all, the meat itself is great but the burger is just the meat on a average bun with no sauce or toppings other than American cheese y/n (and maybe raw onions).

The porterhouse for two was fine but I’ve honestly had better steak at Ruth’s Chris. Sides and dessert were excellent. Service and ambience left a lot to be desired. There are several other steakhouses that offer a better experience. PL isn’t even a top 5 contender imo.

  • replying to u/jzplayinggames: You’re a fan of this place and even you are pretty much saying this place is actually a burger joint. Which says a ton about their steaks.

They have great steaks that appeal to the masses at the table and sometimes come out more rare than you want.

    H3

  • The way Peter Luger prepares their steaks (dry aged, dry brined, sizzling with butter) is the best way to cook a steak. You don’t get the sizzling plate with butter at Keens. Luger has the superior steak.

    H3

  • replying to u/rumfortheborder: last visit to a wolfgangs, i ordered a mid rare steak, came barely blue, refire came to the table blue again. i'm talking cold to the touch. never again

I’ve had two experiences at Luger’s with bad temperature and overcooked steaks. Both times, Med Rare coming out Med Well. Once, you could also tell they just were lazy with the basting, as the steak didn’t have the glaze and coat you want from a cast-iron style steak.

    H3

  • Ordered med rare porterhouses they were beyond rare. Had to cook it by putting pieces onto the hot plate. Lame.

    H3

  • I was in love with their burger, but they overcooked it the last two times I went out of lile 10.

    H3

  • replying to u/NotHal1: Wolfgang’s menu is nearly identical. Same suppliers, same steak, same sauce. At least that’s the way it was when they first opened, and I suspect it’s still the same. That said, I think Peter Luger is special and definitely worth the excursion. It’s an institution, the food is great, never had a bad meal. The servers may at first seen gruff, but they have huge hearts and are very kind and professional. Must try (in addition to the porterhouse steak): smoked bacon appetizer, sides, desserts (apple strudel, pecan pie) with Schlag (fresh made whipped cream). I encourage you to ignore the naysayers. It’s fabulous!

luger ages their own beef, even if Wolfgang gets primals from the same place, the aging is the flavor, and Wolfgangs can't replicate it.

    H3

  • A rich beef flavor with a true dry aged funkiness that is simply not duplicatable with a store-bought, cooked at home steak (or that I’ve found in another steakhouse). The butter it bathes in enhances all the flavor.

    H3

  • Cook it like a normal human being. For some reason their method is to broil the steak till it's a bit charred but still stone-cold rare in the center, slice it, then put it back under the broiler till done to the desired temp.

    H3

  • the experience is unmatched, the setting, the waiters, Peter’s Lager and a martini at the bar while you wait … the evening will be a blast if you go in with the right “mindset.”
